Brady snips eightfoot sausage to open store
A giant eight -foot sausage strung
across the front door at Darling's ICA
was ceremoniously snipped by Lon-
don radio and TV personality Bill
Brady yesterday to mark the official
opeging fo the expanded facilities at
the local IGA store.
Brady was a personal friend ot the
late A.J. ( Fred) Darling. after whom
the building has been named. The
popular Londoner also officiated at
the opening of the firm's stores in
Lucan and Huron Park. The friend-
ship between the two men also
brought Brady to Exeter several
times to perform in comic skits at the
now defunct Exeter rodeo, of which
Darling was a prime supporter.
Grand opening festivities at the ex-
panded Darling's IGA will continue
through this week and next with three
free draws for customers and several
opening specials in all departments.
First draw prize is a side of beef• se-
cond is a whole pig donated by Gielen
Farms and third prize is a whole lamb
supplied by Gerald Dearing.
A new 6,240 square foot addition has
been built on the former parking lot
at the store and the original two-
storey section of the store has been
removed and added to the parking
area.
'The parking area now contains
room for over 60 cars and takes in the

Darling's IGA is operated by the
family of the late Fred Darling. That
includes his wife, Marion, and four
sons, Jim, Jack, Joe and Jeff.
Fred Darling started into the retail-
ing business after he retVrned from
World War Il when he was associated
with Harp Rivers. Darling and Bill
Chambers subsequently purchased
the meat business -front Rivers and
operated the partnership for several
years. By 1955, Darling was the sole
owner and became affiliated with
iGA.
In 1958, Darling purchased the pre-
sent site and opened a grocery store
in the two-storey facility which was
removed to make way for the new ex-
pansion. He expanded the store in
1964.
Darling's IGA in Lucan was open-
ed in 1962 and the Huron Park facili-
ty was opened in 1969.
The firm's founder died on June 30,
1983.
