RUMORS 11 Centre Mall Exeter... _ 11- 7 W No matter what... spring is winning the battle A few mornings ago when I left the house. it was easy to believe that spring was on the way. There was a certain softness in the breeze, and that not quite describable change in the smell of the air. Down in the valley behind our place, the cardinals were calling to each other amid the raucous cries of the crows. A flock of wax wings flew into the ash tree to feast on some left over berries. Two robins swung and . chirped on the bough of the white birch. Oh. yes, it was easy to believe in spring that morning. Later, shut-in .• er ! took a friend for a drive, and although the snow was still piled along the roads, the furrows of ploughed ground were breaking forth in the fields. "And look," she exclaim- ed, "see how the colour of the bush is changing ... for sure the sap is running." We drove into the village of Zurich, and there we saw two of the surest signs of spring. The first was a group of madcap boys riding bicycles that had lain in garages all winter. With great abandon they rode and splash- ed through .puddles left by melting snow, and one young buck feeling his oats and peddling like • lightning drove his bike into a two foot snowbank. To his surprise and our's, the hard drift held firm and sent him sailing over the handlebars. Picking himself up with a wide grin, he wav- ed to us triumphantly, because he knew that even though that snowbank had duped him, its days were numbered, that he and his bike would soon rule again the sidewalks and roads. We stopped in front of the Tasty Nu Bakery, and here was the best harb- inger of all ... a tiny girl skipping. On a patch of clear sidewalk, between two small drifts; she jumped the rope despite the clumsy plop -plop of her heavy winter boots., having shed her warm coat for a thin sweater, she still clung to the boots and the thick woolen toque pulled down over her ears. Because the sixth sense of childhood that told her spring was Wedding Cake Rentals now available Fountain for rent with decorated cake. All colour•co• ordinated to match your wedding. The coming of spring is always a live. The ice, which often stretches across the breadth of the lake in January, begins to crack up in late February and March. One morning, ................. .... ................ tt Seems to me... battle. Winter, which holds us in its rule, does not give up the territory capriciously, and nowhere, it seems to me, is the fight more visible than on the shores of Lake Huron where we by Gwyn Whilsmith we will look out and see a large patch of dark, gray water; the next, it will be taken over by ice again. And so it goes for weeks, until. as the sun grows stronger, and winds, blowing hard from the south-west, churn up huge black waves to do battle with the last ramparts of winter ice piled high on the beach. It's a combat that's fierce and without mercy; spring always wins, beating down the mountains of snow and replacing the rough ice with water that is azure blue and smooth: Even as I look. from my window, to- day, the battle is on. - Yesterday, someone, sick of winter, asked plaintively, "Do you think spring will ever come?" "Of course," I answered confidently, "It's already winning the war." That was easy to say when the sun was shining, the breeze was Tight and a flock of geese migrating overhead. But today, with winds charging in with a mad burst of snow that has closed schools and obscured the view of my neighbour's house, it doesn't seem quite so believable. Still, a few minutes ago when I went to get onions for our dinner's stew, the red mesh bag was covered with green shoots sticking out triumphantly in every direction. So, the shoots, the birds, the children and the lake all tell me it's only a matter of time before • the battle is won, and spring is entren- ched again. Town -Tc The family of. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence B Rohner treated their parents to a delicious dinner at Robin - dale's in Exeter recently on the occa- sion of their 45th wedding anniver- sary. Priestley's unusual psychological thriller An Inspector Calls, The Grand Theatre Company's final play of the 84/85 Season, opens on March 27 at 8:00 p.m. Starring Tony Van Bridge as the mysterious Inspector Goole with Betty Leighton, Richard Curnock, Ian Deakin, Mary Haney and Jeremy Henson, this riveting "whodunit" will run until April 13. Award-winning Derek Goldby will direct the production. An Inspector Calls was first produc- ed in the spring of 1946 at London's celebrated Old Vic Theatre. It was written during the middle years of J.B. Priestley's long and prolific career, which produced such •r • Good Companions, Lost Empires and The Image of Men and the ambitious survey, Literature and Western Man. A recurring theme in many of Priestley's works is time and its many -layered fascinations and theories. An Inspector Calls is perhaps his most celebrated example. Who is the mysterious Inspector Goole and for what reason has he sud- denly appeared in the stately 1912 din- ing room of the prosperous Birling family? Is her really a police inspec- tor, investigating the death of an ap- parently unknown girl once employed by Arthur Birling, or is he someone else whose motives are far remov- ed from those of law enforcement?
