"I'd say there have been very few changes in the past five years," ex- plained Bob Caldwell. co-owner of the firm. The company had found a mix- ture of lines that works and has stuck with it. Caldwell and Jim Hyde bought out the firm from Jim's family, the original owners, in 1971. Caldwell had been an employee with the business before that. Ilyde Brothers has been in business since 1935. They have eight employees. and own the Hensall building where the business is located. Their main line is Allis-Chalmers, and they carry A -C tractors, com- bines and tillage tools. "a full line," Caldwell says. Hyde Brothers also carries Ver- satile equipment: four- wheel drive tractors, combines and tillage tools. Versatile is a Canadian company, located in Winnipeg. They recently in- troduced a bi-directional tractor, in 80 and 100 horse power. Kinsey planters and grain -buggies, and Hiniker conservation tillage equipment round out the stock. Caldwell is concerned about soil erosion, and has been doing a lot of work with conservation tillage equip- ment. He's been invol ed with the Huron County Soil and Crop Improve- ment Association for the past two years. Hyde f rothers has been supplying equipment to farmers who would like to try various conservation cropping methods such as ridge planting. Farmers can rent a ridge building cultivator and a ridge cleaner from the company, and should contact Caldwell for more information if interested. The ridge building system cuts down on tillage and soil erosion. So far, in the trials that have been done on it, crop yields haven't been hurt by the system. "The results have been favourable," Caldwell says. "Some get a little more, some a little less. It's a relatively new system that has to be proven. There's a lot of work being done in this area. The Ministry of Agriculture just hired 11 people to research it." He added, "Ridge tilling allows for better drainage and less compaction. Our experiments have shown crop production or yields are similar to ex- isting methods and costs are much lower. We find savings could be as high as $30 per acre." "If this method of cultivation pro- ves successful and I think it will, we will certainly cut our costs. It's a most exciting aspect for farming in the future," Caldwell added. Interest in new techniques hasn't taken away from the basics of the farm machinery business. "We ser- vice and sell equipment. We just hired a new sales person for the St. Marys area. And of course, all our -parts are listed on computer. There's a part depot in Toronto for Allis-Chalmers, and one in St. Thomas for Versatile." Hyde Brothers employees attend training schools for service, parts and sales, and for all their lines - Allis-Chalmers Versatile and Kinsey. fA.,..40#411L.
