Zurich and District Lions Club makes donations
The Zurich and District Lions Club
met Feb. 18 at the Dominion Hotel
with 22 members and three guests
present. Special guests were guest
speaker and Zone chairman Lion Nor-
man Eveland and Lion Bill Chadwick,
both from the Crediton Club.
Interclub visits recently were to
Hay annual meeting
John Consitt, secretary -manager of
Hay Township Farmers' Mutual Fire
Insurance Co.; said "1984 was one of
the best years the company has ever
had" when presenting the annual
report to the company's 110th annual
general meeting of policyholders.
Hay Mutual began the year with a
bottom black line of $2,272,591. Net
premiums written amounted to
$1,488,573 for a net underwriting gain
of $202,392. When investment income
of $411,915 is added, the statement of
income and surplus for the year end-
ed December 31 shows a carry-over
of $2,887,633 to begin 1985.
Board of directors president Arnold
McCann, v/p Ceeil Desjardine and
director Herb Bierling, whose terms
of office had expired, were re-elected
by acclamation to further three-year
terms.
In presenting the board of directors'
report, McCann said the Zurich -based
company had weathered well the
April 30 windstorm which affected
most of the 51 farm mutuals in the
province; total costs were in excess
of $6,500,000. McCann also commend-
ed the local volunteer fire fighters for
their efforts.
Cecil Desjardine was elected presi-
dent for the 1985-86 term of office, and
Howard Datars was elected
vice/president.

and the Crediton Lions Club euchre
tournament.
The last directors' meeting was
held Feb. 27 at the home of president
Richard Erb, RR 3 Bayfield.
Donations were sent to the
Dashwood Minor Athletic Associa-
tion, $100; Lions Canadian Fund,
5250; Youth camp, *50; Hearing, Sight
and Physically Handicapped, *50;
Lions Home for the Deaf, 525;
Diabetes and Drug Awareness, 550;
Zurich Fair Board, 5250 and $2,000 to
the village of Zurich towards their
commitment.
The special events committee is
busy getting ready for the upcoming
40th anniversary of the club, to be
celebrated on Friday April 19 at the
Zurich Community Centre with guest
speaker PDG Lion John Stephens of
Exeter. Tickets are now on sale at 525
per couple which includes dinner,
entertainment and a dance.
They are also looking for any pic-
tures pertaining to the Club from any
members past and present in order to
print a small booklet on the history of
the club. For any other information
please contact Lions Louis Willert,
Vic Dinnin or Russell Grainger.

Zurich Skaters
Three girls from Zurich who belong
to the Exeter Precision Skating team
travelled to Fraser, Michigan on the
weekend to compete in the mid-
American precision skating competi-
tion on Friday and Saturday. Going
from Zurich were Andrea Hendrik,
Kerry Lynn Dietz and Chrystal Jones,
and their parents.
The pre -novices finished third in
their initial flight in the finals, which
included Andrea and Chrystal.
The novice group finished second in
their flight and eighth in the finals
(also Andrea and Chrystal) while the
juniors came in third in their flight
and seventh in the finals. (Kerry Lynn
skated in this. )
The girls enjoyed meeting a team
from Australia.

Operetta
Those who missed the operetta Tom
Sawyer on Thursday night at St.
Boniface School missed some good
entertainment. It was just great. The
pupils of grades 7 and 8, along with
their teachers, did a terrific job with
the play and the scenery.
The lucky winner in the PTA pay -
what -you -pull draw for an AM -FM
stereo cassette recorder was Wade
Souplat, Zurich. The $25 second prize
was won by Terry Romphf,
Dashwood.

Learning for Lent
Thursday March 7 is the last;'✓ear-
ning for Lent program at the United
Church. Linda Finkbeiner will
demonstrate the art of scarf tying.
Rev. Barbara Laing will present the
Bible study. The session goes from
9:15 to 11:15 a.m.
Skaters
Two members of the Zurich and
Area Figure Skating Club skated at
home competition at Ingersoll on Sun-
day. Cathy Merner came in second,
winning the silver medal. Lisa
Bedard finished sixth in her flight.
Zurich 4-N Club
The Jogging Jerseys held their first
meeting last Tuesday, February 26 at
7:00 p.m. in the Hay township hall
with 12 members present under the
direction of leaders Mrs. Joan Regier
and Mrs. Bridget Groot.
Elections were held and officers
elected were Bonnie Groot, president
Rosemary Regier v/p, secretary An-
nette Regier and assistant Anne
Deichert.
The girls discussed the re-
quirements of the club and different
types of materials used in making
actionwear.
The meeting closed with
refreshments. The club meets again,
March 5. -

- Last weekend Tammy and Paul
Rau spent the weekend with their
grandparents Tony and Adeline
Denomme in Zurich along with cousin
Debbie Regier while parents Michael
and Beattie Rau and Ken and Linda
Gettner, all of Dashwood, went to
Detroit.
Mrs. Juliette Denomme returned
home Saturday from being away for
10 days in London with her daughter

made a beautiful mission at St.

Andrew and Sharon Durand return-
ed home recently from a warm two-
week vacation in Jamaica, where
they found people to be very friend-
ly. They also made a lot of new
friends from all over Canada.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation
canvass in the village realized a total
of St 13. Canvassers were Bill Reid,
Doris t.aycox and Mary Chessell. The /
Red Cross campaign takes place this
month with Mildred McAsh captain-
ing Varna and the surrounding area.
