VANDALS HIT SCHOOLS
Lucan OPP detachment officers
are continuing their investigation of
vandalism at three schools in the
area. •
Damage was extensive at
Biddulph-Lucan Public School where
the vandals broke 'doors to enter.
They smashed more than 40 windows
and attacked desks, pictures and
trophy cases with a hatchet-like
weapon.
Windows were also broken at Med-
way High School and Centennial
Public School, east of Arva, but, no
one entered these buildings.
Police said there is a possibility the
three incidents are related. Damage
has been estimated at $8,000.
Grant request
is turned over
A request for financial help by a
group calling itself Survival Through
Friendship House has been sent back
to Huron County Council's social ser-
vices committee for more
information.
Two representatives of the group,
Rev. Gordon Simmons of Clinton and
George Zolob of Goderich, asked for
the finance aid at county council's
February meeting.
The group operates 24 "safe
homes" across Huron for battered
women and their children. They are
asking the county to give $7.50 a night
for each person who has to stay in a
safe home.
However, county councillors want
an idea of the total annual cost.
Simmons said the goal of the group
is to help women and children in
times of crisis. He said the safe homes
are scattered across the country from
"Huron Park all the way up to Ford-
wich and Gorrie". The exact locations
are known to only one person.
This same group also plans to.open
a women's hostel in Goderich this
spring. The safe homes will then be
temporary places where women can
stay until they can get into the hostel.
For example, if a women calls the
agency for help but the hostel is full
or too far away in an emergency, she
and her children can be taken to a
safe home.
Group director June Talyor said the
idea of the 'volunteer safe homes is a
pilot project modeled after a program
in Manitoba. She says safe homes are
practical in rural areas where
distances make it hard for victims to
get help from a central area.
The safe homes have been running
since last July and from then until
January 31,63 women and 90 children
have come into these safe homes.
Social services administrator John
MacKinnon said more public
awareness of family violence has
made this type of service necessary.
"People are coming out of the
woodwork," said MacKinnon.
Bayfield Reeve Dave Johnston ask-
ed the social services committee to
again look at the question after he
wondered what control the. county
would have in this group. He sug-
gested a social services' employee sit
on the group's board of directors.
