February 20. 1985 " frlockey fans assured of excitin action in upcoming playoffs It's that time of year again when area hockey teams swing in- to the playoffs. In the DHA Western Junior "D" league action in the district starts this week with the Exeter Hawks meeting the Tavistock Braves and the Lucan Irish tangling with the Seaforth Centenaires. ' The Hawks open their bst-of-five set in Tavistock Thursday night with the second game at the Hensall arena Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. The Lucan Irish and the Tavistock Braves will be playing four times in the same time frame. They opened in Tavistock last night, Tuesday. The second and third games go in Lucan, Thursday and Saturday night with starting times of 8:15 p.m. The fourth game is back in Tavistock, Sunday. In WOAA intermediate "A" ranks the Exeter Mohawks have suffered a slight setback in their first two playoff games, but, still have a chance to continue if they win their next two starts. The Mohawks after going through the entire schedule with only one loss and a tie to blemish an otherwise perfect record dropped identical 3-2 decisions to the Teeswater Falcons and Wingham Royals. In order to stay alive the Mohawks must win over Teeswater in Hensall Thursday night and over Wingham at the South Huron Rec Centre, Sunday night. The Exeter pee wees are patiently waiting for their fourth round opponents in OMI -IA playoffs. Currently Leamington and Sandwich West are meeting with the winner to take on Dresden. The winner of this set will then meet Exeter. The local pee wees hill continue with their final Shamrock league contest tonight, Wednesday at the Rec Centre against St. Marys. The Grand Valley Harvesters who eliminated the Exeter Hawks in the OHA Junior "D" semi-finals last season and won the local Hawks tournament in January of this year for the third straight time are undefeated. The Harvesters just recently completed the regular schedule without a loss, winning 21 times and getting ties in their three other starts. • Sports Spotlight by Ross Haugh That's a very enviable record and should make them favourites to grab the all -Ontario title within the next two months. Last year they were edged in the final round by the Mt. Brydges Bulldogs. Tourney on this weekend A couple of weeks ago we gave the wrong dates for an upcom- ing men's rec hockey league tournament tope held at the South Huron Rec Centre. It goes this coming weekend with the first round getting under- way Friday night and the championship games set for Sunday afternoon. • New domed stadium It was good news a few weeks ago when in one of his last moves as Premier of Ontario, William Davis announced approval of a domed stadium for Toronto and area. For sports fans in this part of Western Ontario, most are not thrilled with the location for the new dome which is purported to be the best of its kind. Most in this part of Western Ontario would have liked to have the new facility in the area of Highway 401 making for much easier travelling to and from Blue Jays and Argos games. Just recently we heard Blue Jays broadcaster Jerry Howarth and Ernie Harwell, the voice of the Detroit Tigers for many years discussing the proposed dome. Harwell was enthused when he found out that the dome would be located close to the CN tower and the new hotels in which the Tigers will likely be staying. Howarth indicated the new domed stadium with a retractable roof would be ready for the opening game of the 1988 American League baseball season. in fact it is hoped it will be completed in time for Toronto to be host to the 1987 Grey Cup game that is if the Argos decide to play their home games in the new facility. At the moment, Argos general manager Ralph 6azio says his team will continue to play their games at CN Stadium because of a conflict between a couple of breweries over advertising rights. Back to the location of the dome it probably is the most preferable when one takes into consideration hotel accommoda- tions and transportation. In addition to the subway and other city transportation, there will be parking for 11,000 vehicles within a 12 minute walk of the new stadium. HAWKS HOST BRAVES IN HENSALL, SUNDAY AFTERNOON The Exeter Hawks will face Tavistock in the first round of playoffs in the northern division of the Western Junior "D" loop and if the playoffs are as surprising as the final week of the season, fans should be in for some good action. The Hawks had favoured meeting the Braves as opposed to the Seaforth Centenaires and that wish came true, despite some strange twists. The locals went into the final week of action trailing the Lucan Irish by four points for third place, while the Braves were atop the standings. However, Lucan posted a 12-6 win in Tavistock on Friday, while the Hawks were picking up four points with a 10-4 win in Mitchell. Then Saturday night, the Hawks travelled to Tavistockk for their final game of the season and nipped the Braves 4-3 to share third place, while Tavistock dropped into a first place tie with Seaforth. The Braves and Centenaires were to play on Tuesday An a make_.0 • • --issue, .0 avistock forfeited the contest. Local officials aren't certain how the Irish were picked over the Hawks in the tie-breaker for third place, but they were ruled as fourth place finishers and as such will meet the se- cond place Braves. The best -of -seven semi-final will get underway in Tavistock at 9:00 p.m. on Thursday. The first Exeter game will be played in Hensall due to the fact a rec league tournament has the local Bantams win in houseleagne In a scheduled house league game, the Exeter Bantams beat a team from Lucan 9-4, Friday night. Peter Lerikos led the way with a hat trick while David Josephson scored two goals. Getting single goals were Graham Arthur, Laurie Chalmers, Tom Rolph and Jeff Playfoot. ' Frank Woodward led in the assist department, as he picked up four. Jeff Playfoot and Laurie Chalmers each received two assists, with single assists going to Scott Wedlake, Tom Polph. David Josephson, Jason M1cF'alls and Peter Lerikos. Troy Eddinp, ton scored all four of Lucan's goals. two of them on unassisted efforts while receiving assists from Anson Vince on the other two goals. in an exhibition game Sunday night. Exeter came up on the short end of a 3-I score against a team from Zurich. Rob KcK night scored for Exeter in the first period, with the only assist going to Jason McF'alls. They manag- ed to maintain the lead until the third period when they ran into a rash of penalties and Zurich scored three unanswered goals. Mark Stephens scored twice, with the clincher going in with less than a minute left in the game. Derrick Mar: tin scored the other Zurich goal. John Parker picked up two assists,. with singles going to Mike ('yr, Todd Laporte and Jeff Keller.. Before )iusend it.sealk.I 1141 t(1 V. \♦V• 1111h rec centre filled for this weekend. The game in Hensall will be played at 3:00 p.m., Sunday. The Hawks hit the playoff trail on an upbeat note after a rather up and down season. They have won seven of their last eight games (including the four -pointer with Mitchell) and two of those victories were over the Braves right in Tavistock. The Hawks and Braves split in their six -game season schedule, each win- ning twice on the other team's ice. The Braves, on the other hand, have lost four of their last five games. A familiar face to local junior "D" hockey fans will .be seen around the Hawks during the playoffs. Bob Zim- mer, former coach of the Mitchell Hawks, will be assisting coach Keith Hartwick. Zimmer coached the Mit- chell crew during the many seasons in which they perennially ended up in playoff dog-fights with the local Hawks. He's been coaching in Clinton for the past three years, but wars Edge Braves Playing in Tavistock, Saturday, the Hawks stilt had a share of third place in sight, while the Braves were still clinging to some hope -of finishing in first. That prompted some good, exciting actibn and the Hawks finally prevail- ed for a 4-3 triumph. . The locals dropped behind 1-0 in the first, but had the count even at 2-2 at the end of the second as Steve Prout and Sean Whiteford scored. Steve Batten opened the third with a powerplay goal in the first minute and Ted Hodgins made it 4-2 near the midway mark, again on a powerplay. The Braves whittled the lead to one goal with a marker with three minutes remaining, but the hawks and netminder Pete Dearing held off the final onslaught. Picking up assists on the Exeter goals were Dave Skea, Bill Glover, George Pratt and Scott Brintnell. Dearing finished their game with 29 saves, while Mike Oliver had 34 for the Braves. Both teams had five minor penalities and the Hawks con - verted three of their powerplays into ghats, while the Brace had one. Two in one In Mitchell, Friday, the two Hawks teams battled for four points to com- plete their two games on the schedule. Mitchell struck with two goals ear- ly, but the locals rebounded to take a 4-3 lead after the first and then out- scored their hosts 3-1 in the second and 3-0 in the third. Jason VanHaarlen worked in the nets and recorded 25 saves in the win, while the Exeter crew peppered 55 shots at the Mitchell net. Bill Glover and Steve Batten pac- ed the goal scoring with two goals each, while adding singles were Jeff Pfaff, Dave Skea, Ted Hodgins, Scott Bogart, Scott Brintnell and Jeff Rowe.
