Will nevir make it in speling be
I don't know how many readers
listen to the CBC radio program, On-
tario Morning, with Peter Growski,
but this morning, while washing up
the breakfast dishes, I heard him con-
duct three other radio personalities in
a spelling bee. They worked their way
through words like skeptical, jod-
phurs, high falutin, perspicacious,
parallel and amoeba with a fair
amount of ease.
Just listening to them caused me to
break out in perspiration. During my
long -ago school days, the strap or be-
ing sent to the principal's office held
no terror for me like being chosen for
a spelling bee. My throat dried up as
my palms got wet when I anticipated
the humiliation of always being the
first one knocked down. I could never
understand why words like leisure
and gorgeous would trip me up when
others would rip through apocalyptic
with the ease of a hot knife cutting
through butter.
I've never been handy with words en-
ding with "ible," "able', or "ante,"
"once". And I still go to the dictionary
to see if it's "practice", or "practise,"
"principal" or "principle".
A few years ago, a kind friend,
hearing of my dilemma (another
word 1 had to look up), gave me a
book, "20 Days to Better Spelling". It
was full of tricks to turn anyone into
an adept speller; all you had to do was
to remember the rules. For example,
to reinember that "embarrassed" is

rule, "1" before "e" except after "c",
or when it sounds like "a' as in
neighbour and weight. Of course,
there are the exceptions like either,
leisure, and weird.
However, "20 Days to Better Spell-
ing" assured me if I would but cast
to memory six pages of rules I would

had to remember, "Two robbers were
embarrassed in Sing -Sing." Trouble
occurred when I came to put that rule
into practice because what I recalled
was, "Two thieves were sheepish in
Kingston," which made me forget the
word I was trying to spell in the first
place.
The use of "ie" or "ei" is also
troublesome. Of course, there's the
get it all straight. For instance, if I
memorized the sentence, "When the
enemy beseiges your city you will
seize him by the neck," I would recall
that the "i" in city would tell me to
use "ie" in besiege, while the "e" in
neck would remind me it's "ei" in
seize. Well, you can see, it was just too
much.
But why do I find spelling such a

Some impressions which visiting
Korean women had of our work in the
church were reported by Alma

the Exeter UCW.
They were amazed at the place of
women in the various church
organizations: that we have just one
service a week (theirs are daily
beginning at 5 p.m.); that pastors

club.

Now we are communicating on
levels not thought possible: answer-
ing machines, recordings, cars that
say "fasten your seat belts", talking
books, greeting cards that talk and
television that sometimes enables
people who have nothing to say to
talk to people who aren't listening.
Freedom of speech is best when ac-
companied by knowing when to keep
your mouth shut.
When you buy a machine of any
kind, you receive a book of instruc-
tions. When something goes wrong,
you turn to that book for advice. The
Bible is the book that goes with man.
Here is the information that tells
where he came from, what he is made
for, where he is going and how he can
be kept in order.
The tragedy of life is that there are
so many people who try to live their
lives without the book that goes with
man.
During the presentation Barb Har-
rison read "Watch Your Thoughts"
and Marjorie Adams read John
chapter 1:1-14.
Unit leader, Jean Murray chaired
the business meeting. Plans were
made for a meal to be served at the
Rec Centre, February 23. Madeline
Witmer reported on the Archives, it
was decided to repeat the"Friendship
Tie" and to bring used greeting cards
and craft materials to the March
meeting for use at the Bluewater Rest
Home.
Marion Dearing reported from the
Presbyterial executive meeting. She
said we are urged to boycott "War
Games" and to work for censorship
of videos and pornographic material

chore? Experts say good spellers
have sharp visual memories. They re-
tain what they see. So, even though I
have always been a voracious reader,
1 suspect I read too quickly, not real-
ly looking at the words to retain how
they are spelled.
Other specialists, working with
children with learning problems, say
that some people will never be able to
spell accurately, which, after all these
years, is the class 1 believe I'm in. Not
to worry, though... it's good company.
Henry Ford, the great inventor
couldn't spell worth beans, often
writing verry (very) and mutch
(much). I dont's suppose he worried
very mutch about it either. Then, too,
the publishers of F. Scott Fitzgerald's
work say he was the most abysmal
speller they had ever known. I love
the retort made by Andrew Jackson,
seventh president of the USA, when
he was chided for his faulty spelling.
"It's a very poor mind that can only
think of one way to spell a word".
In the end, "20 Days to Better Spell-
ing" had to admit that English was,
without a doubt, "the most perplex-
ing, most confusing, most paradox-
ical, most contradictory and the most
frustrating system of putting letters
together ever devised by man."
So, it seems to me 1 might as well
give up the hope of ever making it on
the Champion Spelling Bee Team.
