The regulations begin to go into ef- fect April 1, and involve film classifications, store and distributor licencing, and removal of hard-core pornography. Pat Knight, owner of Star -Time Videos in Exeter, thinks the new regulations are a great idea. "1 think it's wonderful. It should have happen- ed from Day 1. It takes the onus off us," Knight said. Knight knew about the regulations, but hadn't received a copy in the mail. Jackie Coon, supervisor of three Oscars Video stores, also hadn't received any notification. Speaking off the cuff, she said she had already been putting some of the regulations into effect on her own discretion. "I'm very careful of who I rent what to. We won't rent a restricted video to anyone under 18. and we don't carry any real pornography anyway." Both Star -Time and Oscars have stuck tdcarrying films approved by the Film Review Board of their own volition. But that doesn't mean the others weren't available to them. "We used to have a man here twice a week, wouldn't give his name or anything, selling hard-core movies from the trunk of his car. But 1 wouldn't touch that kind of stuff," Coon said. Knight also commented on the "really filthy stuff you see on the shelves in the States.': Coon didn't think porn was a big part of store's business, at least not in this area. "Family and comedy are our biggest sellers. Once in a while so- meone will rent out a "dirty" tape, but they're so bad -- it's usually a group of people and it turns out be a big joke." As of April 1, all video retailers and distributors will have to be licenced. the licences will cost stores $50 an- nually, and cost distributors $250 a year. The Theatre Amendment Act also covers classification of videos through a sticker system. Stickers will label films either Family, Parental Guidance, Adult Accompaniment or Restricted. The stickers are intended to help the public judge content of films. The criteria by which the Film Review Board (formerly the Board of Censors) may refuse to approve films and videos has also now been made law. the criteria are based on com- munity standards, and are intended to curb the flow of pornographic and violent films. Licence applications will be mail- ed to all video retailers and distributors in Ontario. Processing of applications could take as much as six weeks from date of receipt. 3 TEAR RRSP 1 13/4% SI • Ulla 2424213 Agentkir *#C Jt11llUITI P$ ltlf . • GIRLS GET SIGNATURES - Andrea Pearce and Kendra Arthur were successful in getting the autograph of long di$tance swimmer Cindy Nicholas at Tuesday's Exeter Lions Sportsmen's Dinner.
