At home to Mitchell, Sunday
Hawks win three straight, raise optimism for playoff hopes
• • •
While many fans had written off the
Exeter Hawks based on their play
over the past three weeks when they
lost six straight, the club rebounded
this week with a tie and then three
straight victories to raise optimism
they may yet be a force to be reckon-
ed with when playoffs start later this
month.
Following their most impressive
week of the season, the locals moved
to within four points of the third place
Lucan Irish and still have three
games in hand.
Three of the team's final five games
are with the cellar dwelling Mitchell
Hawks, a club the Hawks trounced
12-3 this week.
The tie was against Lucan and the
other two triumphs were over the loop
leading Tavistock Braves in
Tavistock and a .make-up game at
home against Thedford.
This week the Hawks travel to Mit-
chell for a game on Friday and then
on to Belmont, Saturday. Mitchell
pays a return visit to the rec centre,
Sunday, at 2:00 for the final league
home game of the season for Exeter.
The Hawks will be keeping a close
eye ori the battle -for first place bet-
ween Seaford] and Tavistock. The
Braves currently lead by two pints
and have four games in hand.
Indications are that the locals
would prefer to meet the Braves in
the first playoff round.
The Hawks started the week off
with a 6-6 tie in Lucan, Wednesday,
coming back from a two -goal deficit
at the end of the first and out -scoring
the Irish 3-2 in each of the second and
third periods.
The contest was evenly played
throughout as both netminders made
37 saves. Bart Powell was strong in
the second to keep his mates in the
game, while Kevin Oke came up big
in the third to preserve the tie for the
Hawks.
Brian Horner continued his hot
streak as he recorded a hat ,trick.
Singles came off the stick of Andy
Lerikos, Mike Clark and Steve Gould.
Scott Brintnell drew assists on three
of the Exeter markers and Bill Glover
had a pair. Helping out on one each
were Steve Prout, Don Hamilton,
Sean Whiteford and Jeff Pfaff.
Scott Balazs and Steve Glenn
scored twice for the Irish and Rob
Hardy and Brent Bannerman added
the singles. Bob Thirlwall assisted on
three tallies, while Steve Keane add-
•
ed a pair and Glenn, Al Craig and
Jesse Crawford recorded singles.
The teams stuck to hockey in their
final league meeting of the season as
the Hawks sat out six minors and the
Irish had only four. Exeter scored
once on the powerplay and Lucan net-
ted one while playing a man short.
Both goalies drew one penalty.
The Irish won the six -game series
with four wins, a tie and one loss.
Trounce namesakes
The local Hawks showed no mercy
when they hosted their namesakes
from Mitchell, Friday, trouncing the
northern division cellar dwellers by a
12-3 margin.
They peppered a total of 77 shots at
two Mitchell goalies in a game that
saw three fights for six major
penalties and another 18 minors.
Exeter stormed to the attack and
Steve Gould gave them a 1-0 lead
after only 20 seconds and they con-
tinued the onslought to take, a 6-1
margin by the end of the first period.
Gould, Brian Horner, Jeff Pfaff and
Scott Brintnell scored two goals each
to pace the lopsided victory. Single
markers were fired by Jeff Rowe, Ted

Shade leaders
In one of their best showings of the
season, the Hawks continued their
winning ways with a 6-5 triumph over
the Tavistock Braves in the northern
division leader's own rink, Saturday.
The Hawks led 5-2 after two
periods, backed by some solid net -
minding by Peter Dearing, but wat-
ched the Braves rebound to knot the
count on two powerplays and an even
strength goal in the first half of the
final stanza.
However, while playing a man
short with less tha four minutes to go
in the game, defenceman Ted
Hodgins took a pass from Bill Glover

Bounce Browns
Playing their fourth game in five
nights and their third in a row, the
Hawks appeared to be runningout-of
steam when they tackled the Thed-
ford Browns in a make-up game at
the rec centre, Sunday.
The locals jumped into a 2-0 lead in
the first five minutes, but then wilted
and watched the visitors rebound to
take a 3-2 lead near the end of the mid-

In a Shamrock hockey league ban-
tam game this week, Exeter edged St.
Marys by a score of 3-2.
After St. Marys captain Joe Weston
opened the scoring in the second
minute of the first period, the Exeter
bantams struck for two quick goals
and a lead which they never
relinquished.
Shawn Moore tied the score on an
unassisted effort and captain Jon
O'Connor fired a successful shot on a
three-way combination with Scott
Bell and Larry Lewis.
O'Connor's second goal of the game
at 2:44 of the second period proved to
be the winner. Jeff Hannah provided
the assist.

dle frame.
Exeter evened the count in the last
minute of the second and then found
their second wind in the third as they
took control of the game and scored
five unanswered tallies in the first 11
minutes.
Steve Batten, who hadn't scored
since the first game of the season,
doubled his season output with two
goals, a feat duplicated by Bill
Glover. Scoring singles in the contest
were Steve Gould, George Pratt, Scott
Brintnell and Jeff Rowe.
Brintnell was the top playmaker
with three assists and those helping
out on one each were Glover, Jeff
Pfaff, Brian Horner, Batten, Dave
Skea, Gould, Sean Whiteford Scott
Bogart and Mike Clark.
Several of the Exeter goals came on
nifty passing plays in -the third after
the squad looked rather disorganized
in the late stages of the first and
throughout the second.
Peter Dearing kicked out 26 shots
in the game in which Exeter took 15
of the 27 penalties, including a
fighting major to Steve Prout and
Brad Cloud of the Browns early in the
