The healthy looking "Sparrow Hawk" is ready for freedom again: Naturalists help hawk Most people probably think that the Pinery Park is provided mainly for their own enjoyment. Not only is there camping; skating, tobogganing and cross-country skiing; but there are wild birds and animals. Keeping these wild friends in safe- ty, are park naturalists Terry Crabe, and Casey VandenBygaart. An American Kestrel was recently brought to them in a very weak state. The bird was originally caught at one of the chemical plants in Sarnia. The man who found it, took the bird home for a month and then brought it to the park for release. When Crabe notic- ed that it was still thin and weak; he and Casey built a cage for the bird. The American Kestrel is a com- mon, pointed winged falcon that is seen quite regularly sitting on the hydro lines, along the roadside in this area. Crabe said they stay here year round, and feed mainly on small birds and rodents. Terry and Casey managed to find several recent rabbit road kills; cut these rabbits up, froze and fed it to the Kestrel each day for about six Weeks. The return of health was noted by Casey- and Crabe, as the_ ag- gressiveness of the hawk increased quite quickly when he became stronger. The blue -gray wings of the male, make it quite easy to tell him from the female. These birds never become tame. It was successfully released after being in captivity for two and one half months.
