Weather helps restore faith in man
Just when most of us thought the
whole world was going to the dogs, a
blizzard clobbering us from the west,
restored our faith in humankind,
again.
Today (January 22), as the storm
I was about to plan the funeral, the

abates, the radio, T.V. and papers are
full of heroic deeds and kindnesses
shown to many who needed help dur-
ing the storm. And I'm sure there are
hundreds of others, who will never be
publicized, who saved people from
serious consequences, or even death.
The weather may have been blister-
ing cold outside, but inside many
hearts it was warm with the milk of
human kindness.
We experienced some of that kind-
ness, first hand. My husband, Art,
returning from Toronto, during the
blizzard, on Saturday, drove through
white out after white out, passing a
maze of stranded cars and trucks,
and picking up a few people along the
way whose cars were stuck fast in
the snow. Dropping his passengers off
in Exeter (where he should have
stayed himself), he somehow manag-
ed to continue to manoeuver the drifts
and blinding snow to within ten miles
of home. Finally, one huge, hard bank
was just too much of a challenge for
the car, and he had the choice of spen-
ding the rest of the night where he
was, or trying to walk to shelter.
Through the thick haze of swirling
snow, he spotted the dim glimmer of
a farmer's yard light and decided to
head for it. He climbed into the back
seat, and struggled into • his
snowmobile suit, which he had thrown
in at the last minute, and started out
to plow through the deep snow. After
what he said seemed like 10 miles, but
which was actually not much more
than 500 yards, he reached the com-
pletely blacked out house. Fortunate-
ly, however, the farmer, Ray Hart-
man, heard his insistent pounding,
opened the door and welcomed him
into the safety of his house.
Meanwhile, Mobie (the dog) and I
were holding the fort, watching the
ever mounting banks of snow, while
peering anxiously out into the wild
night, wondering if Art was safe, or
freezing to death in his car. Just when

Museum Policy of bringing the

The multi -sensory exhibition is
housed in three specially -designed 19
metre transport trailers. An elevating
device is available for people in
wheelchairs.
Items on display include models of
pre -ice age animals like the woolly
mammoth, scimitar cat and saiga
antelope, and mounts of contem-
porary animals, like the arctic hare,
wolverine and snowy owl. There are
whaling harpoons, a Viking ship
model, huntet:'s traps, religious ar-
tifacts, and Northwest Mounted police
regalia, to name a few of the things
you can see.
Museumobile caravans are design-
ed to withstand very rough road con-
ditions and extremes of temperature.
The caravan is assembled in a U -
shape, and can be set up or dismantl-
ed in one hour. A diesel generator pro-
vides power to heat and air condition
the exhibit.

stove, and to discover the water pipes
were frozen solid... with not so much
as a drop in the tea kettle. After tur-
ning the electric heater on the outside
wall of the basement where the water
line comes in, I happily remembered
a small bottle of water left over from
when the well pump went off during
a recent hydro cut-off. I dampened a
washcloth to whip my face, poured
out a quarter cup to clean my teeth,
and decided to keep the rest for the
numerous cups of coffee I was sure
I was going to need to get me through
the day.
Time passed slowly. Snow con-
tinued to sweep in from the Lake, the
drifts piling higher and higher, whip-
ped up by fiercely blowing winds.
Then, out of the blue, a friend (well,
actually we didn't know him before,
but he's certainly our friend, now),
Ross Turnbull, offered to rescue Art
with his four wheel drive. It seemed
like a brilliant idea until he, too, got
stuck in the same snowbank that en-
trapped Art. This story might have
ended with two stranded drivers at
the Hartmans, but no, Ross called his
brother Paul into the rescue act with
his big green tractor with snowblower
attached.
So, about 20 hours after he'd first
got stuck, Art was delivered to our
own driveway, despite the fact it was
storming just as hard as ever. He had

couldn't be sure which I was happiest
to see.. him grinning and striding

running freely from the tap.
Anyway, it seems to me, it's only
right to extend a heartfelt thank you
to Ray and his family, to Ross and
Paul, and to all you others who so will-
ingly lent a helping hand to those in
difficulty during the storm. You've
proved to all of us, once again, that
the old world is still in pretty good
shape.
