Teacher fined for assault
A Fanshawe College teacher who
smacked another man in the head
during a picket line incident October
29 was fined #200 For common assault
in provincial court Friday.
John Remkes. 45, of Exeter was
found guilty by Judge Al Guthrie last
month after being charged with strik-
ing Terry Lewis of London on the side
of the head during a scuffle at the
college. -
Remkes' lawyer, Eleanor Schnall,
said she plans to appeal the conviction
and the sentence.
Guthrie said emotions were running
high on the picket line at the college
the night of the assault because strik-
ing teachers were stopping cars and
"disseminating information:" Fan-
shawe teachers, along with communi-
ty college teachers across the pro-
vince. were on strike for 31: weeks
last fall before being legislated back
to work.
The judge said the tension was
caused by the pickets. not members
of the public such as Lewis who were
trying to enter the college.
. He said deterrence to s -was
rime concern in setting sentence.
"The court must demonstrate this
kind of activity will not be tolerated."
He conceded "rehabilitation" was
not an issue and agreed with Schnall
that Remkes would probably never
assault anyone again. But the judge
declined Schnall's request for a
discharge. saying Remkes had been
found guilty and a discharge would
not serve any purpose.
He said damage to Remkes' reputa-
tion had already been done through
publicity given the case and word-of-
mouth communication.
Gerhard Gedies of Dorchester. a
character witness for Rernkes, said
the incident would hurt Remkes' abili-
ty to teach and was undermining his
self-confidence.
"1 can see his status as a teaching
master challenged by the students."
said Gedies, chairman of a technical
division at Fanshawe and Remkes'
