THE FIGHT FOR -THE
SPIRIT
By Shawn Jacob
'-Precious Blood
One day while the elves were work-
ing on the toy for Christmas there was
a loud knock at the door. One of the
elves answered it. -
it was the abominable snowman!
He came to steal the spirit of
, Christmas! He told one of the elves to
'get it. -
- He was back in a flash. The
abominable snowman took it. He was
gone. The eves told Santa. Santa told
Rudolph and Dasher. Doner, and Big
John. They had to go to the forbidden
mountain. it took them an hour. Then
they were there.
• Now they had to fight for the spirit..
boom! bang! bang! They won. They
took the spirit and they had Christmas
after all.
What I Do At Christmas
by Alex Russell •
Grade 6. Stephen (Central
Usually 1 go to grandma and grand-
pa Russell's the night before
Christmas.
When we get there we play
pinochle: at supper of turkey. corn.
potatoes. gravy, jellied salads and
more. Then we have the good stuff -
dessert. with alot of cakes. pies, ice
cream and cookies.
After that we open gifts and give
. them. Then the kids play with them
while the older kids watch TV and
play pinochle until it'sjime to go.
Then (Christmas night we go to My
other grandparents and do the same
thing hut we don't play much cards.
We just fool around. That's a sum-
mary of what I do at Christmas.

with Mrs. Cathy Mason, vice presi-

Mason led in carol singing.
When Mrs. Mason asked if anyone
had special' memories of Christmas
several ladies shared experiences.
Mrs. Shirley Mason read a poem of
The Night Before Christmas. which
showed the worldly careless attitude
towards Christmas. •
Mrs. Eileen Currie gave a study on
Christ's birth. Tracing the prophecies
of -the coming of the Messiah through
the Old Testament. Mrs. Currie then
gave the scripture from the New
Testament which told of the fulfill-
ment of each prophecy.
Each lady had during the year a
Secret Sister. from .drawing -names,
for whom she prayed for, and sent bir-
thday cards to. That evening each one
gave a little, gift tatheir Secret Sister.
which showed Who they had been
praying for. In January different
names will be drawn for Secret
Sisters for 1986.
Homemade articles were brought.
with a price tag on them, which made
some money for missions. tft•the end
of the meeting, Christmas snacks
were served.

• Doug Butler led the -song service
Sunday morning. Rev. Roger Mason
read Matthew 2:12, the story of the
Wise Men coming to worship baby
Jesus. It also tells of the_ different
response people have towards Jesus.
The firstresponse from King Herod
was of hostility. Herod considered the
birth of Jesus as King of the Jews to
be that of a rival king. Heintended to
eliminate this rival when he had all
the little boys killed in Bethlehem.
The Wise Men, the' Magi. came
about sis months after, Jesus was
born from -another country.Thus. they
were not Jews. The leaders of Israel
did not- even know the Messiah was
. born. Herod's title was King of the
Jews. Then carne the Magi asking
where -the Messiah. the -King of the
Jews. was born.
When Herod found out from the
scribes tate Messiah was to be born in
Bethlehem, he asked the Magi when
they had first seen the star announc-
'ng Jesus' birth. This showed Herod
where Jesus was born, and how old he
was, so he could have Him killed.
Many people ignore Christmas, or
replace Jesus with a Santa Claus,
while still singing Christmas carols.
The Christmas story cannot be
separated from the sacrifice of Christ

silent than the people.

on Calvary. and the Lordship of
Jesus. The birth of Jesus was the birth
of God's Son, who is meant to be Lord
of our lives. Most people at Jesus'
birth showed apathy. Very few knew
or expected the birth of .Christ. The
shepherds declared His birth but a
few months later it seemed people did
not know or care of His birth. Christ's
birth is met with apathy today. Peo-
ple celebrate the season. but they do
not give Christ place in their lives,
A few reponded to Jesus' birth with
worship. Angels worshipped Him as
they announced His birth to the
shepherds. The shepherds went and
worshipped baby Jesus. The Magi
wanted to see and worship the
Messiah. They fell down and worship-
ped Jesus. and presented Him costly
gifts. God wants us to give Him
ourselves. not just costly possessions.
Because. their hearts were right
with God. the aged Simeon and Anna
knew baby Jesus was the Messiah.
and came to worship flim. Worship
involved gratitude and thanksgiving_
andspearing ur brut.
The Sunday evening service was
enjoyed by candlelight at the altar:
Mr. Doug Butler again led the carol
singing. Rev. Roger Mason spoke
from Luke 2:25-:'.g. about the aged Si-
meon and tonna. At -Christmas we
think of all the events leading up to
and after the birth of •Jesus. but Si-
meon and Anna are overlooked.
Simeon and Anna demonstrated
qualities the Lord requires of us as
Christians. One is their devotion to
God. All we know of them is found in
these verses. Verse 25 states Simeon
was righteous and devout. Righteous
is how he conducted himself with
others. Devout is his relationship to
God. He also had the Holy Spirit
abiding with him. telling him he
would not die until he had .seen the
Messiah. Simeon did not desire to
aquire wealth or fatne. but only that
he could see the promise of God fulfill-
ed in his life.

WANT TOAPPEAL
YOUR ASSESSMENT?
You stilt have time to appeal your 1985 assessment if you
feel your home or business property has been improperly
assessed. -
Your assessment is important because the amount of
property tax you pay depends on it, in that the assessed
value of your property is multiplied by your municipal and
school mill rate to determine your 1986 property taxes.
Notices of Assessment have been* mailed to property.
owners and tenants whose assessments have changed
since last year: Open houses have been held in your area
to answer questions and amend assessment information
if necessary. Open house dates and locations were
announced in a previous advertisement.
The Assessment Roll has. now been delivered to your
municipality for the purposes of calculating the amount of
taxes you must pay on your property in 1986. For informa-
tion on your assessment, the Assessment Roll is now
available for review at your Municipal Office during regu-
lar business hours. If you feel your property has been
improperly assessed, and you have not yet made your
appeal known, you still have until January 7, 1986 to
deliver or mail an appeal to the Assessment Review
Board. And remember, even if you did not receive a
Notice of Assessment, you still have the right to
appeal.
Appeal deadline—January 7, 1986
The Assessment Review Board is an impartial body
reporting to the Attorney General of Ontario, which pro-
vides you with an additional opportunity to have your
assessment reviewed if, in your opinion, it is not fair and
equitable with similar properties in your area. The Review
Board is more informal and relaxed than a regular court of
law. You may present your own case, retain a Iawyer.or
ask a relative or friend to speak as your agent.
To help you in filing your appeal, Notice of Appeal forms
are available from the Assessment Review Board;' your
Regional Assessment Office or your Municipal Office. As
well, you can use the reverse side -of a Notice of Assess-
ment or write a letter stating the property address and roll
number, together with your reasons for. appealing.
Appeals should be forwarded to the Regional Registrar of
