trust persists in Fr. Jim's relationship
with people to this day. -
Father Whelihan coached many
young men who since have risen to
positions of high political office, to the
upper echelons of the legal profession,
to the presidencies of major in-
dustries, to eminent ranks of the
clergy, to positions of importance in
the educational world , and mostly to
the rank of husband and father of suc-
cessful families. The one common
thread which relates him to them all
is their response as dignified humans
to their fellow man.
The honours which society have
granted to Father Whelihan are con-
firmation that his philosophy, his vi-
sion of the future possibilities of the
life of every young person is impor-
tant to our society. His personal
friendship with each person he con-
tacted and the love and regard his
students and friends have for him is
memorialized in the goodness of their
lives.
FatherA helihan was born in 1902
near Lucab and attended Union
School 12 in Usborne township, high
school in Lucan and Windsor and the
University of Western Ontario.
A Lucan native, Father James
Austin Whelihan has been honoured
with entrance to the Alberta Sports
Hall of Fame 1985 and The Order of
Canada 1985. In 1954 he was named
Sportsman of the Year by Booster
Club of Calgary, Alberta.
Father Whelihan was influential in
the lives of Calgary youth for 37 years
as a teacher and vice-prinicipal at St.
Mary's High School in Calgary and
director of athletics for Calgary
Separate Schools.
He was conscious of his obligation
as citizen of Calgary to contribute to
the well being of the city.
It was in 1946 when his coaching
abilities were employed by the
Calgary Tornadoes, a team he coach -
"ed to the Western Canada Junior
'Football Championship in 1946 and to
the finals in Vancouver the following
year. He assisted with the coaching
of the Junior North Hill Blizzards in
1948.
Likewise, he assisted for many
years with the flag football league for
the twelve and thirteen year olds of
Calgary. No matter the age or the
prestige of the position, he served the
young.

the fact the school was, for many
years, populated by fewer than 300
students. Championships came to the
school on a regular basis much to the
surprise of those who did not know
Father Whelihan. His philosophy of
hard work, respect and striving for
the best had its results.
Mediocre athletes were encourag-
e to the limits of their talents; mpre
ws expected from the gifted. Every
member of the team realized his du-
ty and was encouraged to give his all.
The Public Schools of Calgary knew
they had a friend in Fr. Jim. He was
interested in students, not in their dif-
ferences. If his expertise as a coach
and counsellor could be utilized by
anyone, he gladly offered his ser-
vices. Never was there a hint of un-
fair or bad competition between St.
Mary's School and the Public Schools.
The story is recounted of the first time
Fr. Jim's football team competed in
a City Championship. The organizers
announced their choice for -referee
and Asked Father for his selection.
"Anyone who is knowledgeable con-
cerning football," was his reply. His
basic trust in the goodness of his
neighbour was not a naive virtue but
rather a polite conviction which

cooperation. The same gentle sense of
