Varna seniors enloy turkeyi.
By Mary Chessell
The Stan -Lee Seniors Club held
their annual Christmas party last
Tuesday evening, with about fifty in
attendance. A delicious smorgasbord
was enjoyed, consisting of turkey
roasted by Louise Ivenchenko,
Norene Hayter and Anna Keys and a
potluck variety of everything else.
Bill Reid won the lucky chair prize
and Bruce Keys had the lucky plate.
Percy Brown won for the birthday
closest to Christmas and Mary Brown
was winner of the ten -cent draw.
Bin and Eleanor -McAsh showed
beautiful pictures_ of their trip to
Europe and Great Britain. The rest of
the evening was spent playing shuf-
fleboard or euchre. Winners of card
prizes were Bernice Reid and Elmer
Hayter for high scores, and Dorothy
Ostrom and Mary Reid, low scores.
the big, beautiful Christmas tree at
the Complex was located and cut by
Cliff Henderson and Aldie Mustard. It
was put up and decorated by Cliff, Bill
and Mary Chessell, Ruby Triebner,
Bill and Eleanor McAsh and Norene
•
Hayter.
Varna UCW
About 30 U.C.W. members and their
guests had a delicious potluck supper
at Varna church on Thursday even-
ing. Following the supper, Joyce
Dowson, with Shirley Hill at the
piano, led the singing of carols.
A thought-provoking and dramatic
worship service was presented by
Rev. Wilena Brown, Dorothy Ostrom
and Margaret Hayter. There was
meditation on how we prepare for
Christmas and readings on Joy, the
Gift of Love, and receiving gifts
graciously, alternating with scripture
readings and carols. Miss Brown
prepared and told the Christmas story
as Mary, thb mother of Jesus, might
have told it. •
Joyce Dowson, Helen Taylor, Mona
Stephenson and Deb Rathwell sang
the beautiful 0 Holy Night. Eleanor
-McAth and Ruth Johnston received
the offering:
Guests were present from Clinton,
Goderich and Bayfield. We were
pleased to have Mary Barket of King
City with us. She and her husband
Don spent a few days in Clinton with
her father, Fred McClymont.
( Intended for last' week
Varna gained another house Last
Wednesday, when Barry Cleave mov-
ed a house from Landon to .bis lot
where the Coultis house used to be.
Blackouts are rare in Varna, but
there -was a two-hour power interrup-
tion on Sunday evening caused by a
fallen limb on one phase of the line
east of the village. For some, the old
wick trimming skills had to be reviv-
ed. It's hard to believe we were able
... to do hours of homework by the light
of an oil lamp, A gas generator was
put into service at Brian McAsh's.
Shuffleboard
As winter approaches, more people
are getting out for shuffleboard at the
Complex on Wednesday nights. There
are cards for anyone who doesn't
want to play shuffleboard. If there are
too many for the courts, those with
low scores play cards during the next
game. It's a very congenial group, so
come out for an evening of fun and
good conversation over a potluck
lunch.
New Year's Levee
If you're not committed to a fami-
ly gathering elsewhere, remember
the New Year's Day levee at the Com-
plex from 2 to 5, the start of the Ses-
quicentennial celebrations. This is a
family social, with entertainment.
"Meet and mix in '86".
White Gift Sundjy
Nancy Webster led the White Gift
church service in Verna church on
Sunday. Darryn and Krista McAsh
and Sandra Coultis read the Advent
scriptures and Darryn lit the first
candle. They were joined by Mark
and Mary Ellen Webster, David
Rathwell, Brian Hill and Tbny Coultis
in the playlet "Only a Stable".
Children of the Sunday School sang a
Christmas song. The lovely new ad-
vent wreath was made by Lynda
Postill.
Over sixty members of the con-
gregation and Sunday School had
lunch together at the Stanley Complex
after church. A special treat for the
children was McDonald's orange
served in McDonald cups. They were
happy to have the new reeve,
Clarence Rau, his wife Sharon and
daughter Vicki Lynn as guests.
Joe Laurie was master of
ceremonies for the concert. Eight lit-
tle kindergarten kiddies did an action
verse, "A Christmas Tree Story".
Recitations by Raymond and Heather
Beierling, Brian Hill and David
Rathwell were interspersed through
the program. The junior class of Kim
Taylor, Heather Beierling, Mary-
O'Reilly
aryO'Reilly and Heather Laurie also did
a recitation. Nancy and Julie Webster
played piano duets, and piano solos
were played by Mary Ellen and Mark
Webster and Krista McAsh.
Krista McAsh and Sandra Coultis
took part in a dialogue. The four
children of the Couttis family sang,
and the families of Blaine and Bill
Stephenson and Don Rathwell did a
very cute musical performance of
Jingle Bells. '
The arrival of Santa caused lots of -
excitement, as did the gifts they all
received. (My thanks to Carol Simons
for reporting the concert in my
' absence.)
