You could do a lot worse than get a copy of the official guide and record book for 1985-86 of the National Hockey League. First of all inside the front and back cover you can find the current N111., schedule. It is a '354 ,page book and on page five is listed inseructions on how to use the guide. In includes every conceivable record ever set in the NHL, along with team rosters, results and records; final 1984-85 statistics, Stanley Cup records, a player register, a goal tender register and something new for the first time an NHL challenge quiz. -For local fans, the professional records of Dave Shaw and Paul and Perry ['coley are included. The NHL draft choices of the years from 1969 to 1984 are shown and it's interesting to note that about only half of the other players' {>' drafted first by the other 20 clubs at the same time as the Quebec Nordiques took Dave Shaw as 13th overall are making a name for themselves this season. Of this group in addition to Shaw, the top performers include Brian Bellows, Gord Kluzak, Gary Nylund, Ron Sutter, Scott Stevens, Phil Housley, Rich Sutter, Pat Flatley, Ken Yaremchuk _and Jim Playfair. It was great to hear the Nordiques general manager make glowing comments about the play of Dave Shaw following Friday's Sports Spotlight by Ross Haugh CTV weekly telecast. He said Dave was a pleasant surprise and now considered one of the best players on the Quebec club. A week ago in reporting Dave's selection as Nordiques player for the month of November we failed to reveal that he was chosen over a pretty fair hockey player Marion'Stasny. The challenge quiz in the. NHL guide and record book is spread Tavistock here, Friday throughout the edition with answer's to the 100 questions appear- ing on the last coulpe of pages. While talking about Christmas gifts we could make another good suggestion `Tickets are now on sale for the 1986th edition of the Exeter Lions Sportsmen's Dinner and would look good in a Christmas stocking. ' The tickets for the popular event remain at $35 for adults and $20 for students and children. A good portion of the price is again tax deductible. They are now available and may be purchased from any member of the Exeter Lions club and several businesses in town. This upcoming dinner slated for the South Huron Rec Centre on Tuesday, February 4, 1986 will be the 13th annual and number 13 could prove to be lucky to area sports followers. Only two celebrities have been confirmed to date, but, if the rest are of the same quality weshould be in for an exciting dinner. - The master of ceremonies is Gordie Tapp who doubles on televi- sion as Cousin Clem and a number of other characters. One of the main speakers will be the Montreal Canadiens immortal Maurice "The Rocket" Richard. Mohawks score impressive win over Harriston Blues • After losing 5-1 in Palmerston. Saturday night, the Exeter Mohawks rebounded with authority in Harriston Sunday night to score an impressive 14-3 victory over the home team Blues. The Mohawks in their next -start will be at the South Huron Rec.Cen- tre Friday night, December 13 at 8:30 p.m. to take on the Tavistock Royals. In Palmerston Saturday night, the only Exeter goal•came early in the third period when Bill Glover con- verted a pass from Cam Doig. A solid effort by Ray Brick in the Palmerston goal kept the Mohawks to a single score. Although referee Lee Rodgers call- ed only 15 minor penalties with the Mohawks taking seven, three of the Palmerston goals came on power play attempts. Early Start Against the Harriston Blues Sunday night, the Mohawks wasted little time in redeeming themselves from the previous night's low scoring produc- tion. They outscored the Blues 5-1 and continued with six scores in the se- cond 20 minutes of play..Three goals in the third frame completed the Ex- eter scoring. The game was only a minute old when Dale Gibbon connected on a pass from Pete Tucltey and at 2:40 Boys basketball.. at South Huron In senior boys basketball competi- tion, the South Iluron Panthers travelled to London to participate in an exhibition tournament. The team played Clarke Road in a close match. South Huron got off to a slow start but managed to defeat their opponents 61-46. Rob Tait played an excellent game and was top scorer with 22 points. Scott Lovie, Chris Pearen, Mike Clarke and Dave Gratton also had good games. South Iluron also defeated Parkhill in another close match. The final score was 78-63. Rob Tait was the !eading scorer for Exeter with 27 points. Scott Miller scored 18; Mike Clarke ands Chris Pearen scoffed 14 and 12 points respectively. The senior Panthers lost one game this weekend to a visiting Toronto team. Rob Tait was _top scorer and Scott Lovie followed. .Junior Boys In junior boys play the Panthers did not fare quite so well as the senior team. In a match against Parkhill the team lost 42-:1L Rob Pearen was top scorer with eleven points. In a match against King City South Huron lost 61-31. Trevor Ratz was the leading scorer with eight points. Rob Pearen earned the team seven points and Fred Gregus scored six. Jim Benn hit the Harriston net on a three-way effort with Bill Glover and Barry Baynham. At the midway point of the opening session, Brian Horner registered on Waxers get even break In two Shamrock minor league novice hockey games this week, the Exeter Waxers blanked Thamesford 7-0 and dropped a 3-2 decision to Belmont. In the victory over Thamesford, Jamie Van Dam led the Waxers in the scoring department with a three goal effort. Sean McCann was next with two successful shots and Marty DeBruyn and Ted Hoffman counted in single fashion. The top playmaker was Trevor Taylor with three assists to his credit. Ian Jean helped set up two goals and single assists went to Trevor Truemner, Eric Clay and Ted Hoffman. In the loss to Belmont, Sean McCann and Gavin Snell were the Ex- eter marksmen on passes provided by Eric Clay and Trevor Taylor. Credited with assists were Cam Doig, Barry Baynham, Brian - Mercer, Ron Elliott, Mike Clark and Dalibbon. In the third period, the Exeter marksmen were Mike Clark, Pete Tuckey and Cam Doig. Dale Gibbon gained a pair of assists for a five point night and Steve Prout, Randy Kraut and' Mike Clark assisted in single fashion. The Mohawks win was the result of a complete team effort and the abili- ty to stay out of the penalty box. Referee Lee Rodgers called a total of 18 minor penalties., but the Mohawks took only five.
