What the world needs now
A friend passed along a column, by
Marie Salway, called "The Sounds o[
Love " It was so good 1 photocopied
it and sent it to all our children.
Nut that it told me anything new,
but i1 did remind me how important
love is in all our lives. The author
commences, "If you want to die, stay
depressed, if you want to survive.
learn to -love " She adds that the one
enhancing force in the world is love,
while the most destructive is despair.
All of us want to be loved. to be
cherished. Many people are starved
for love and try to fill the craving by
watching endless numbers of films
about happy and unhappy love
stories, and listen to hundreds of
trashy love songs. Vet. although
everyone thinks love is important.
hardly anyone believes there is
anything that needs to be learned
about it.
Not so, says Erich Fromm, world
famous psychoanalyst. Love is an art,
he say s, and as with learning any
other form, be it music, painting.
Post office
helps Santa
Post Office employees in the more
than 400 post offices in Huron Division
southwestern Ontario) are once
again busy in an annual labour of love
- helping Santa Claus with his
Christmas correspondence. This
near. Canada Post expects to handle
letters from more than 50 thousand
girls and boys (and a few adults) in
the area on behalf of the jolly old
fellow.
Canada Post has helped Santa
answer more than one and a half
million letters since the Santa Letter
Program was inaugurated on a cross-
country basis in 1982. The program
was meant to enhance local, in-
dividual efforts that had been going
on for years, and to give children in
many parts of the country inopportu-
nity to get a letter from St. Nick for
the first time.
Toward that end, replies have been
prepared in several languages (in ad-
dition to English and French) in-
cluding Polish, Portuguese, Viet-
namese, Dutch and Chinese. When
postal officials learned that several
children attending a school for the
blind in Brantford had written to San-
ta, replies were prepared and sent
back in braille.
For the most part, letters to Santa
are culled from the mail stream,
although several post Offices have set
up a box especially- for Santa's mail
in the lobby. In 18 cities and towns in
Huron Division, letter carriers mar-
ching in local Santa Claus parades are
collecting thousands of letters from
the small fry along the parade route.
For their part. children wishing to
write to St. Nick are asked to be sure
to include a return address (and
postal code) and to be sure to get their
letters in no later than Dec. 13 (to en-
sure Santa's reply gets hack to them
before Dec. 25! ).
Santa's address is: Santa Claus,
North Pole. Canada, [1011 OHO.

carpenty or engineering, we must
proceed lin the same manner until we
have mastered it. But. whereas peo-
ple will hold nothing back to learn the
mastery of these other arts, most peo-
ple very rarely try to learn the art of
love, despite the deep seated need for
it. In our society, we will expend great
looked atter them, or if we have
destroyed their own self respect by
our constant criticism. On the other
hand, we can pronounce loudly that
we love our children but if our actions
don't show it, we're apt to get the
same results as the woman who tells
everyone she "lust loves plants," and
It Seems to me...
amounts of energy and time to team
how to achieve sures, prestige,
money and power, but we will expend
nothing to learn the art of loving. Yet,
love is the most important force in the
lives of all of us.
Oh, we will go out and seek love.
and even if we're lucky enough to find
it, we often don't know how to keep it.
Our divorce records are proof of that.
Our attitude is "Loves me and I will
love you in return" and we play a kind
of desperate game of blind man's
bluff...each with our own little bucket,
empty and waiting to be filled with
love, but with no love of our own to
pour out into some one else's bucket.
The big thing about love is that we
can't love anyone else until we love
ourselves. "Love .thy neighbour as
thyself!" commands the Bible. imply-
ing that respect for one's own integri-
ty, love and understanding cannot he
separated from respect, love and
understanding for another person.
The love for my own self is in-
separably connected with the love I
have for another individual. Being
loved by a happy person who genuine-
ly loves himself/herself is the best
thing that can happen to any of us!
We cannot demand love. We can
say. "Love me, I'm your father." but
our expectations of being loved back
will not be met if we have heaped guilt
upon our children by constantly
reminding them how 'unselfishly' we
bv Gwyn Whilsmith
then doesn't water them.
As Ms. Salway says in her column,
the time to love is now. Death doesn't
respect age, so don't wait until the
crops are off, for Christmas, or until
your ship comes in. Why is it, though,
we're often so reticent to tell people
we love them'' It's an age where we
talk to people whirling around in outer
space, but we can't say, "I love you."
One poor woman said, "I know my
husband can be tender, gentle and
loving. 1 know because he talks that
way to the dog!" Funny, but sad.
So, today, hug your wife. Kiss your
husband. Thank your waitress. Com -
