The sixth annual Lucan Cup Challenge goes at the Lucan Com- munity Centre and at the South Huron Rec Centre in Exeter it's the annual oldtimers tournament sponsored by the Exeter Molting Hawks. Both tourneys start Friday night, continue all day Satur- day and conclude with final championship games tate Sunday afternoon and evening. The Cyclone series is being held in conjunction with the Lucan ('up for the second year. Preliminarames were played this past weekend setting up the "B" final contest at 7 p.m. between the Stephen Stars and Seaforth. A t 9 p.m., the Lucan Lazers and Delhi Gaters will meet for the grand championship. President Tom Hardy and his hard working committee have again been able to come up with 16 top notch teams from western Ontario, the 'Toronto area and Michigan. The defending champion Brooklin Flyers from Oshawa will not be hack this year for the Lucan Cup and Goderich, winners of the Cyclone division a year ago were eliminated in the just con-. 'eluded preliminaries. Three" of the Michigan clubs are the Fraser Flags, Griffin Stars and O'Leary. The always strong International Stick team from Toronto will be back. The Lucan Cup Challenge is now a complete community enter- prise with support from a large number of groups. These include in two weekend area tournaments minor hockey, local merchants, village council, the Lucan Lions, the Lucan Optimists, both oldtimer teams, the arena board and staff along with countless others. The oldtimers tourney in Exeter will provide a good brand of hockey from participants who must be at least 35 years of age. The Molting Hawks will be participating on the ice in the weekend tourney . and they will be kept busy keeping the tourney running smoothly. PD Entertainment Lynne Farquhar and her cohorts at the South Huron Rec Cen- tre have lined up some great entertainment for today, Wednesday as area school students enjoy a day off as the teachers participate in Professional Development. In the morning from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, a Walt Disney _film entitled, "The Cat From Outer Space" will be shown. Very im- portant is the news that the concession booth will be open during intermission times. In the afternoon, it's an hour and a half of free public skating from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Following the December 7 Santa Claus parade in Exeter, another free sessiop of public skating is available at the Rec Cen- tre. This free ice time is sponsored by Tuckey Beverages. Lynne also reports plans are being completed for a mixed sno- pitch tournament to be held at the Rec Centre grounds on January 11. It is expected 16 teams will participate. Get your tickets now The Exeter Lions club announced this week that Gordie Tapp v ill be the master of ceremonies at the 1986 Lions Sportsmen's Din- ner which is scheduled for the South Huron Rec Centre on Tues- day, February 4. Tapp who has a number of relatives in the area should cer- tainly keep the dinner pace rolling with his well known humour. Tickets for the dinner are available now from any Lions member and would certainly make an excellent Christmas gift. All proceeds from the dinner go to the Thames Valley Crippled Children's Treatment Centre in London and also assists crippled children in this area. It's a worthy cause. The Outlaws are second with 12 and the Young and Restless are third with 11 points. in recent action the Colonials beat Algoma Tire 6-1 and tied the Young and Restless 4-4. The latter team also edged the Whalers 8-6. Brad Raters, Steve Jennison, Pete Tuckey, Ken Bergmann. Larry Johns and John Musser scored single goals to lead the Colonials 6-1 over Algoma Tire. Greg Ilern counted for the losers. Ken Bermann scored twice and Ron Moore and Steve Jnnison notched singles for the Colonials in the tie with the Young and Restless who were led by Brian Taylor's two goal effort and one each from Gary Sararas and Dave Atthill. In the Young and Restless victory over the Whalers Brian Taylor notch- ed four goals and two each were add- ed by Dave Atthill and Gary Sararas. Jeff Rowe and Dave Hayter, with two goals apiece were best for the Whalers and Mark Vandergunst and Ed Willis scored in single fashion. Jamie Caldwell had a hat truck and Terry Caldwell and Greg Campbell scored one each as the Outlaws defeated Exeter Inn 5-3. Scoring for the losers were John Coleman, Jerry Smith and Tom Ryan. The third Mohawks goal near the midway mark of the middle frame when Pete Tuckey converted passess from Doug Latta and Ron Elliott. The lone New Hamburg score came at 6:46 of the final 20 minutes of play when Paul Eby hit the goal post on a breakaway, but the puck bounc- ed off an Exeter defender and into the net. Three minutes later, the Mohawks regained a three goal lead as Brian Mercer found the New Hamburg net on a pass from Randy Kraul. With just more than two minutes to go, the third power play of the night for the Exeter club paid off. Ron Elliott wps the marksman on passes provided by Brian Baker and Dale Gibbon. At 18:20 Jim Benn notched the sixth goal of the night for the winners with Brian Mercer and Doug Latta picking up assists. The wins were 9-2 over Parkhill and 9-6 over Lucan while the losses were by score of 9-:3 to St. Marys and 6.2 against Belmont. Six uan.swered goals in the first halt of the game ensured the 9-2 Exeter victory over Parkhill. Jim Lewis and Biddy Richardson each scored t'.o goals in the early scoring while Terry Zachar and Paul Mellecke scored in single fashion. Jon O'Connor was the top playmaker with three assists and Terry Zachar gained a pair of assists. Yelping on one goal apiece were Bryan Quinn. Jim Lewis and Bill Lessard. The final three Exeter scores came from the sticks of Dave Russell. Tim Moore and Jon O'Connor. Paul Mellecke was the leader with three assists, Buddy Richardson, Tim Moore. Mark Morrissey and Jon O'Connor each helped on two and singles went to Jim Lewis. Darryl McCann, Chris Tiedeman, Dave Russell and Bryan Quinn. Darren Neil was tops.in the scoring department for Lucan with four goals. Adding singles were Mike Hirtzet and Lawrence Pocock. in the loss to Belmont. Jon O'Con- nor notched the first Exeter goal and provided the pass for a successful shot by Jim Lewis. Tim Moore, Bryan Quinn and Jim Lewis were the marksmen for the Generals as they lost to St. Marys.
