IN MEMORIAM —
BAILLIE — In loving memory of a dear
wife, mother and grandmother, Myrtle,
who passed away one year ago, November
19, 1984.
To a good life came a peaceful end.
She died as she lived, everyone's friend.
Upright and just in all her ways
Loving and kind to the end of her days.
We saw her suffer, heard her sigh,
We could dd nothing, but sit close by.
We have lost, but heaven has gained,
One of the best the world contained.
Lovingly -remembered and sadly missed
by Charlie, Helen, Brian and girls, Ruth
and John. 47e
HUMPHREYS — Treasured memories of
a wonderful husband, dad and grand-
father, Thomas Humphreys who passed
away November 14, 1976.
If we had one lifetime wish,
One dream that could come true.
We would pray to God with all our hearts;
For yesterday and you.
If teardrops were a stairway,
And memories were a lane,
We'd walk all the way to heaven Dad.
And bring you home again.
A thousand times we needed you.
A thousand times we cried.
If love could have saved you, Dad.
You never would have died.
But God took your hand and we had to part,
He eased your pain and broke our hearts,
You fell asleep without good-bye,
But memories of you shall never die.
Loved and missed so very much by wife
Betty, son and daughter-in-law Tom and
Phyllis, grandchildren Tom, Terry and
Tracy. 47c

1983.
One precious to our hearts is gone.
The voice we loved is still.
The place made vacant in our lives,
Can never more be filled.
Always a thought and many a tear.
For one we miss and loved so dear.
The sudden way you had to die,
We always remember and wonder why.
No one knows the sorrow we share,
When the family meets and you are not
there,
We hold our tears when we speak your
name,
But the ache in our hearts remains the
same.

Singers plan
festive event
For many people in our area, atten-
ding the traditional concert of the
Blyth Festival Singers maKks the first
event in, the celebration of the
Christmas season. This year the choir
will present two performances in
Memorial Hall on Sunday, Decemh r
1 at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.
For their concert, the choir will be
'performing a variety of works that
differ in style and time. Included in
the repertoire are usual ar-
rangements of familiar Christmas
carols by the well-known British com-
posers David Willcocks and John Rut-
ter, a number of sacred Christmas
pieces new to our audiences, as well
as familiar Christmas songs.
Throughout the program will be carol
sing-alongs which the audience is in-
vited to join.
The Festival Singers are directed
by Laurie Rowbotham of Listowel
and accompanied by Louise
McGregor of Clinton.
Part of the Singer's traditional
Christmas concert has been the inclu-
sion of a childrens' choir and this year
the choir is pleased to have the Elm
Township Public School Choir under
the direction of Lori Nelson perform
with them. Lori was a member of the
Listowel High School Chorus under
Rowbotham.
In this concert of traditions, the
choir invites the audiences to join in
the carol sing -along and also share in
the mulled cider and Christmas

Publishers, editors
shouldn't hold office
It is improper for a newspaper
publisher, editor or reporter to hold
office in any public or private body
likely to be in the news, the Ontario
Press Council says in an adjudication
announced Tuesday in a complaint
about conflict of interest.
The adjudication condemned the
Huntsville Forester for its conduct
during a Muskoka secondary school
teachers strike when its editor, who
was a member of the board of educa-
tion, wrote all the editorials commen-
ting on the strike.
The council's opinion echoed the
view of the Forester itself, which said
in a statement to the council: "Our
case stands as another example and
warning to newspaper editors and
publishers across the country'. Those
in our business, who are directly in-
volved in the collection and presenta-
tion of news and opinions, should not
run for public office."
Ed Willms and associates at the
Huntsville High School complained
about the conduct of the Forester. in
reporting and commenting on
prestrike negotiations and the strike.
The complainants asserted that the
editor, as a member of the board of
education, used his editorials and per-
sonal columns to project a highly par-
tisan viewpoint and to create a huge
imbalance in the publie debate.
An editorial on January 16 drew
particular criticism from the com-
plainants, who argued that it
misrepresented the facts, especially
in stating that Muskoka had been
targeted for a strike by the Qntario
Secondary School Teachers
Federation. -
The Forester conceded, in a state-
ment to the council, that it made a
fundamental mistake in yielding to
public pressure within the communi-
ty and letting its editor seek office as
a trustee.
The newspaper added that it had
set up an editorial panel well before
the strike to review all editorial com-
ments on the issue, although this was
not made public until February 6, well
after the strike began. It defended its
editorial stand against the publisher
and others on the staff.
Text of the adjudication:
"The council, believes that:
"1. A person participating in public
events cannot deal fairly and objec-
tively with news and comment about
them; and
"2. It is improper for a newspaper
publisher, editor or reporter to
goodies in the lower hall following
each performance. Tickets at 85.00
and $1.50 for this family concert can
be obtained from the theatre box of-
fice at 523-9300, at the Blyth Saga at
523-4331, or from members of the
Blyth Festival Singers.
assume the dual roles of both actor
and critic by holding office in any
public or private body likely to be in
the news.
"Consequently, the council con=
demns the newspaper's conduct in the
teachers' strike and in the prestrike
negotiations. Instead of setting up an
unannounced editorial panel to
review editorial comment it ought to
have: 11) disclosed publicly the con-
flict of interest involved in its editor's
position as a school trustee; and (2)
announced that, because of the con-
flict, the editor would neither write,
nor edit nor contribute to any
editorials on negotiations on the
strike.
"The complaint is upheld."
