'Optimist sponsored scavenger hunt a
success for
youth.
Members of the Exeter Optimist club are to be congratulated
for the excellent activities they organized for local youngsters dur-
ing Youth Appreciation Week.
The big week to show that boys.and girls and teenagers are
appreciated started with a dance on Friday night and concluded
the following week with a scavenger hunt and prize presentations
at the South Huron Ret Centre agricultural building Friday night:
The scavenger hunt was divided into two age categories and
the prizes were substantial. The Optimists in total provided $300
in cash prizes.
In the six to 12 years of age division, the Exeter Girls Guides
won first prize of $50 and second consisting of $40. These monies
won by the Guides will eon tinue to be used for the extension of youth
work.
The articles which were to be collected in the scavenger hunt
were very varied and to say the least unusual.
Among the unusuai.items to be collected were a left hand nut,
a bed pan, a cherry pitter, a 1950 licence plate, a goose -feather,
a live praying mantis, a picture of a Clydesdale, a work boot, a
Mexican stamp, a racoon's tail and a white porcelain door knob.
Scavenger hunt chairman Dave Werrett reports that two of
the teams actually came up with "41 of the 42 articles listed. The
only thing they didn't come up with was ajive praying mantis. In-
stead. the Optimists received a dead praying mantis and a picture
of ,one.
• The cherry pitter didn't prove as difficult as one might expect.
One youngster brought in his grandmother's and several others
found they could be purchased at a local store.
Werrett says about 100 youngsters participated in the
scavenger hunt and added, "Next to the bike rodeo this is the best
and most popular event we have ever come up with".
The Optimist chairman went on to say, "We as a group feel this
type of fun filled event is much more satisfactorfor everyone con -

cerned than just buying hoc key, soccer or baseball sweaters for
local teams.
The next bike rodeo is scheduled for early May and'tip'timist
Harry Stuart will be the chairman in charge.
4TV flashback
Many area telev Sion viewers caught the CFPL-TV news
flashback of Tuesday night. It went back to the late 1950's and
showed Bob Pooley answering the telephone at the Exeter Bowl-
ing Lanes and informing his father the late Ted Pooley that he was
elected mayor of Exeter. This was followed by congratulations
from Bob Sanders who was bowling on a lane alongside Pooley.
Prepare for Lucan Cup
For the second consecutive year, an important part of the
Lucan Cup hockey tournament will be the Cyclone division. While
the main events in the Lucan Cup will take place on the weekend
ending December 1, preliminary games in the Cyclone grouping
will go this weekend.
The first'game goes at 12 noon Saturday at the Lucan arena
with Lobo taking on Seaforth. At 1:30 p.m. ,it will be the Lucan
1.azers against Strathroy, defending champion Goderich meets the
Biddulph Bruins at 3 p.m. and at 5:30 Delhi takes on Centralia.
Second round games will be played this Sunday with the "B"
final at 7 p.m. on December 1 and the "A" final at 9 p.m. the same
day.
We will talk more about the Lucan Cup next week. But for now
it's a few paragraphs about the Cyclone division. Chairman Tom
Hardywanted to get a few things off his chest. He said he was very
dissapointed when an Exeter entry failed to materialize.
Hardy went on to say, "The reason given was that they would
not be competitive. with the other teams. They have about 100
players in the rec league and should be able to come up with a good
team. We would like to rebuild the rivalry with Exeter that existed
among our intermediate teams of quite a few years ag:.."
