Parents meet
at Dashwood
On Thursday evening, about zu
parents and resource persons met'in
the ARC Industrial cafeteria with
president Donna Greb presiding.
Roberta Walker was nominated tafill
in as secretary for a one-year term.
Donna then introduced the
speakers, Joy Bourget, from Com-
munity and Social Service (COMSOC
in charge of the Special Services at
Home Program, and Helen Watson,
Executive Director GDAMR from
Goderich.
The new Special Services at Home
is a pilot project for one year, and
they are presently interviewing for a
Program Co-ordinator. This person
would then address the problems of
staff training, county co-ordination
and parent relief. A pool of specialists
has to be organized for speech
therapy behavior modification,
physiotherapy, and any other needs.
The program co-ordinator then inter-
views the parents to assess their re-
quirements, line up their proper
specialists and arrange the home care
programs to be implemented.
In Parent Relief, a pool of trained
personnel have to be developed who
can provide specialized care for these
children on a full or part basis, so that
a parent can get away to attend a
meeting, or a day of shopping, or a
weekend of much needed relaxation.
Some parents who work might even
require a full time care -taker, for up
to 40 hours a week.
These persons must be instructed in
CPR, first aid, nutrition, basic child
care and some aspects of
physiotherapy, in order to implement
the programs as prescribed.
Both Helen Watson and Joy
Bourget also explained various
methods of funding that parents can
obtain from the government at
various levels, such as Handicapped
Child Benefits and Assistive Devices
Program. Parents working through
the school board may also be able to
obtain special tutoring, where deem-
ed beneficial to the child's learning.
The main thrust of the vast amount
of information presented at the
meeting is to reassure parents that
they are not alone in eating for their
handicapped children. By knowing,
where and when and who to go to for
help, they can tap into a vast and
ever-growing .resource pool of
specialists, financial aid and child.
care.
The next meeting will be planned
after the holiday season, and all in-
terested parents of children or teens
are invited to attend.
Mary's Musings
-- By Mary Alderson
Somehow, the word got out. I think
I've told you before -- I am an animal
lover. Well, word got around, and all
the mice in our neighbourhood figured
they could move in for the winter.
Last year, some of the furry critters
thought they could make their home
in our basement. But after we
murdered and maimed a few of their
number, they took up residence
elsewhere.
This year's crop was much bolder
-- they wanted to set up housekeeping
in the kitchen. Maybe, just maybe, I
might have let one or two of them
away with it. They could help
themselves to the arrowroot cookie
crumbs under Chelsey's highchair,
and generally keep the place tidy. But
they weren't content with that. They
let all•their freeloading in-laws and
cousins move in, too. Little mouse
relatives from all over wanted to call
our kitchen home. •
They really do have cute little faces
with their bright eyes and whiffling
'whiskers. and as I say, 1 might have
left the first one alone, but she invited
all her relatives, and when it became
too crowded in the kitchen, she decid-
ed to move on to the diningroom.
I'm very fond of the rose -pink
carpeting in my diningroom. Ap-
parently, she liked it too, for she tried
to burrow into it. While her grey fur
went well with the colour scheme, 1
told her she couldn't continue to live
there. She refused to move, so 1 clen-
ched my teeth and set the traps.
1 sooned learned that cheese isn't
always the best thing to put in a trap.
The cheese dries and hardens, mak-
ing the little pieces easy bait to steal.
Nor was Cheez Whiz any better; it
hardens, sometimes covering the trig-
ger so that the trap doesn't spring.
Peanut butter, I learned, is the best
bait of all - you can stick it down firm-
ly to the trap, making it difficult to
steal and it stays moist and sticky.
The mice are especially fond of crun-
chy 'sgyle.
Well, we did away with Mrs. Mouse
-- she died happily eating peanut but-
ter. But she left behind a very active
family of young ones, all determined
to revenge her death.
War was on. We bought and bor-
rowed extra mouse traps. A fresh jar
of peanut butter was purchased. Their
days were numbered.
The only problem was -- little, tiny
baby mice aren't heavy enough to
spring a trap. There is nothing more
frustrating then watching a mouse sit-
ting on a trap eating the bait and
calmly looking at you. When he
finishes his meal you barely touch the
trap with a knife and it snaps. So you
re -set the traps and they are hair -
triggered, snapping two or three
times before you can set them down.
Eventually my nerves were shot.
from not knowing when one of those
traps was going to try to get me as 1
was setting it. The mouse kept retur-
ning for more peanut butter -- each
time becoming more friendly. He
thought we were pals and 1 was
feeding him. Finally, 1 got my
camera and took photos of him. Ile
sat up and grinned at me -- I think he
was saying "Cheese".
What become of my little furry
friend? Well, eventually he got heavy
enough to spring the trap and that
was the end of him. You'd get fat too
on a steady diet of crunchy peanut
Nutter.

Humane group meets
The November meeting of the
Huronia Branch of the Humane Socie-
ty was held at 'the O.M.A.F. Office,
Clinton.
The treasurer's report was given
showing that the Shelter Fund is very
slowly growing with a couple of
generous donations. The old address
has been cancelled and the pew ad-
dress is Box 8, Clinton.
Arrangements have been made to
have a booth at the Vanastra &
District Lioness bazaar on November
16. We will be selling tickets for the
Decemner zi uraw on an original
Gund Honeybear.
During the October meeting in Lon-
don, Bev Chowen was asked if we
would be interested in sponsoring the
Original Herrman Royal Lipizzan
Stallion Show for this area possibly in
May. Everyone agreed that it would
be a good way to raise more funds.
Pat Jaimeson is going to phone for
more information on what it would
entail.
