McCurdy -Huron Hope elementary school. Permission has been received from the Huron County Board of Education to construct a community playground to be used by students during school hours and by the rest of the community after school hours and on weekends. School principal Pat Soldan is heading the committee which will be behind the plan to provide much needed playground equip- ment. Included will be a playground platform, tire bumper swing, fireman's pole, rainbow climber, flat slide, clatter and slide tube. Other members of the committee are Wendy Conium, Sue Wilson, Marj Green, Jim McLeod, Marilyn Day, Sandra Rider and Rick and Mary Walker. Soldan says the program is being established because of positive response to a survey of parents in the community which was initiated by the school. More than 95 percent of the people surveyed were in favour of this type of equipment for youngsters mainly in the age range from pre-school to 10 years and 80 per- cent of those responding said they would be willing to help in various ways. Donations have already been received from the Huron Park Brownies, the Centralia -Huron Park Lions, Fleck Manufacturing, the former Stephen township nursery school and Rita Cook of Grand Bend. One of the fund raising projects will be a yard auction sale 1111111111111111IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII,IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIn111I11111I11111IIIII111111111II111111III111I1111111111III111IIII11111I111I11111111111II111IlI11II111Illllllll 11111111111111nlllllllllltllllllllnlllnl{In111111111{II{I lllnlnlntllllnlll nlllll nllnlililminium 11{IlnnllnlllllllIlll. planned for next spring. Construction is expected to start in May when the ground is clear and that's when lots of volunteer labour will be welcomed. The -target date for completion is June of 1986. This sounds like a great community project and the instigators are to be congratulated on not only their idea, but the planning and fortitude necessary to make it become a reality. Sports Spotlight by Ross Haugh An oddity We would make a guess that William Perry, the refrigerator should enjoy his newly found instant success while he has it. He is an oddity, a professional football backfielder that tips the scales in excess of 300 pounds. His team the Chicago Bears are the only undefeated team in the entire NFLafter 10 games into theseason. On a winning streak from the coaching staff. When the chips are down as the Bears try to remain unbeaten and beat a path to the Super Bowl, Perry will likely not see much action. About all that is left for Perry to try in the offensive backfield is to throw a pass and Ditka will probably come up with that. Perry's nickname came from his inability to keep the refrigerator door closed. His mother says he would eat three chickens, four hamburgers and then go out to supper. Off the cuff Tampa Bay quarterback Steve Young comparing the NFL to the USFL says, "Now we don't have to chip in to pay the bus driver to get us to the airport." Occasionally one hears how important a good driver is in get- ting the best effort out of a standardbred horse. Recently at Pompano Park in Florida in a challenge race, Mickey Mantle drove Sea Fella to a 47 length victory over Tem- ple Hanover driven by Whitey Ford. The big news is that Mantle's horse went the mile in two minutes and 32 seconds. Yes, that's 32 seconds slower than if a pro was in the sulky. One point difference as Panthers .lose H.P football final to Vikings One point doesn't seem to be much that remains the difference between the South Huron Panthers and the Goderich Vikings in the Huron -Perth football conference. On a muddy field which created a slippery ball in Goderich Saturday, the Vikings scored a single point late in the game to win the championship game 7-6. The two teams had previously beaten each other by_ eight points duringthe regular schedule. Over the season each team scored 236 points. The Panthers allowed 18 points while the Vikings allowed 15 points. Disregarding penalties which were fatal to the Panthers, there was little difference in offence generated by the two teams. South Huron gained 113 yards rushing and 43 passing while Goderich picked up 158 yards on the ground and 28 through the air. The Panthers were assessed 138 yards in penalties, several coming in very key situations. The Vikings lost 63 yards by way of penalties. The game started with the Pan- thers recovering a Goderich fumble, but, a 15 yard penalty for spearing stopped a potential scoring move. Twice in the first half, the Panthers had the Vikings hemmed into their own, but let them off the hook through penalties. Early in the second quarter, Gib Dow of the Panthers made a super play on going for the ball on a Goderich pass, but was called for in- terference on what coach Ron Bogart described as "a poor call" by the officials. Bogart says his players were "up too tight" especially in the first half and didn't play as well as they should have. The Panthers failed to pick up any }first downs in the first half. Goderich scored a touchdown late in the second period, but the cohvert kick was very low and easily blocked. In the second half the Panthers seemed to loosen up and get some of- fence going. Early in the fourth quarter, Sean Whiteford went over from the one yard line to tie the score at 6-6. The convert was missed. A Viking punt with less than three minutes to go went 35 yards for a single point and that was the difference. The Panthers got the ball back but any scoring chances were thwarted when a pass was intercepted. On the ground Bill Fisher and Sean O'Rourke led the Panthers. They each gained 39 yards in eight carries. On defence, Joe Gower made 11 key tackles and Allan Pym was right behind with 10 big stops. Coach Bogart summed up the game this was, "Everyone played well. We never let up. I think we won the physical battle, but not the score and that's what counts." Bogart went on. to say, "Special thanks to all, fans and parents who supported us all year and especially on Saturday. It was great.
