Exeter Pentecostal Tabernacle pastor Rev. Bob Donnan repeated the words of King' David from 1 Chronicles 22:19 when the first sod was turned on a bitingly cold Sunday in March to begin construction of a new church on Highway 4 just south of the town limits. "Arise and build the sanctuary of the Lord God", Donnan quoted, and that. is exactly what the church members did. Less than six months later, the.first service was held in the large, well-designed, attractive edifice. The contract with Don Hawkey Construction had called for 2,000 hours of volunteer labour. Approx- imately 80 members of the congrega- tion donated their services. Men' helped with everything from excava- tion to putting the steeple in place. They assisted with tile drainage in- stallation, framing and building, and putting sheeting on the roof. The women of the congregation spent countless hours cutting out and sewing together choir gowns design- ed by Caroline Perry. Both sexes pooled their talents on the decorating. A committee compos- ed of Brenda Treibner, Shirley Perry, Marlene Hayter, Dave Beiman and Gerry Fergusson chose exterior bricks and shingles, terracotta in- terior wall paint, the grey -brown carpeting, steel blue upholstery on the oak pews, and the pale rose sanctuary curtains. The arresting brass and glass wall and ceiling light fixtures were chosen by the board members. Both men and women wielded brushes to paint every wall in the Church. Both washed windows, scraped the gym floor, and vacuum- ed the entire 19,700 square footage three times as excess stucco from the ceilings flew out through the air con- ditioning system. The congregation has increased each Sunday since the first service on September 8, the sanctuary can ac- commodate 413, and an overflow area will seat another 30. Two courtesy cars are a phone call away for those needing a ride to a Sunday service. A video screen will be in place on November 17 in the spacious fellowship hall on the lower level to seat some of the large crowd expected to attend the official dedication ceremony. The lower level also contains a gymnasium that can seat 325 at a ban - Circus heads for the theatre Barnum, the blockbuster musical celebrating P.T.
