Cost of pole billed to driver
The PUC's old truck was sold for
$5,500 recently, manager Hugh Davis
reported to the regular October ses-
sion of the Commission. Davis said he ,
had hoped to get $7,000, but as the
vehicle was sold uncertified and a
local garage had estimated that $1,060
worth of work would be required to
allow it to pass a safety check, he was
satisfied with the price.
A transformer was installed as soon
as it was delivered last week, and Ex-
eter Tool and Die is now in business
in the former quarters of Golden
Harvest Seeds.
The man who knocked down a pole
on Wellington St. in September was
sent a bill for $3,600, the cost of the
replacement.
Davis. reported three occurrences
of breaks in the water main on
William St. Davis said this strange
coincidence could not be attributed to
a change in water temperature, nor
to frost. He speculated that it could
have been caused by ground
movement.
An expensive replacement of pipe
at' the curling rink is on the immediate
horizon. The ancient galvanized line
on club property had been constant-
ly patched and clamped, and now the

PUC line under the road is also
leaking.
The job will begin as soon as
materials arrive. If the weather -is
mild, a length of fire hose will be run
from the hydrant to the rink's cooling
system to keep the ice from melting
while repairs are in progress. Davis
estimates the utility's share at close
to $2,000, as copper pipe is very
expensive.
Davis reported 16 new water ser-
vice connections in 1985, with more to
come. He wondered why Exeter's
population remains fairly constant,
while the number of households has
gone from 1,607. in 1979 to the present
1,695.
Davis said the street lights have
been installed on the new stretch of
John st., and lighting is in and
energized for the extensions at the
mobile home subdivision. Meter
testing has been completed, and the
anodes installed along Thames Rd.
This means all capital budget items
are finished.
Figures published by the Electrical
Utility Safety Association show that
the Exeter PUC's safety record is
"now in the 15 -year area, getting near
the top".
Davis is to attend a marketing
meeting in London, and warned the
Commission he may voice his objec-
tion to some of the advertising he
dislikes, citing as one example the
talking furnace.
The PUC will meet for its next
regular session on November 27 at
3:30 p.m.

Town of Exeter;
I would like to praise the efforts of
your PUC staff and the people on the
town work force who collect our
refuse, cut dead limbs from trees,
carry away large and unwieldy heavy
discards, and generally help keep this
lovely town neat and tidy!
The town workers appear to take
pride in a job well done, and their ef-
forts and dedication pay off hand-
somely. They must suffer from a fair
amount of petty criticism. It's
unearned! Travel anywhere in On-
tario and you'll not find a better ser-
viced town. Most people here take
pride in caring for their homes, but
they are well and truly aided by the
town's workers.
It's difficult to pick out one from
many, but I'd like to highly commend
Bill Hirtzel. He's a genius with a
chainsaw.
Please let Bill and his fellow
workers know I appreciated their ex-
tra efforts.
• Yours truly,
J.M. Gibson

Renlembrance Day will be observ-
ed next Sunday in Varpa beginning
with a church service at 10 a.m.,
followed by a service at the Cenotaph
at 10:45.
The International Year of Youth
was celebrated with a special church
service last Sunday. A playlet about
Christian faith and God's involvement
in historical events was presented by
Jacqui Taylor, Leslie Linfield, Dar-
ryn McAsh and Scott Kirton. Darryn
led in prayer for young people and
Scott McAsh dedicated the offering.
Scott Kirton played a guitar solo.
Ian- Deslauriers, who is an active
layman in Wingham United Church
and a leader .in youth groups and
camps, led the singing of songs
like the Sunshine Song, Blowing in the
Wind, Amazing Grace, Peace Like a
River, the old hymn Whosoever Will,
Let it Be, and the beautiful 0 Lord,
based on Psalm 8. He sang a solo,
Father and Son" and told the
children a story about family relation-
ships. Ian works for the Maitland
Valley Conservation Authority.
Rev. Brown regrets that she was
unaware that the school choir was
singing at Egmondville Church's
150th anniversary. She would have
scheduled this special service for
another Sunday, as several of our
young people and their parents were
unable to attend.
Wilfred Chuter attended the wed-
ding of his granddaughter Lisa Boyce
in Richards Memorial United Church
on Clarke Sideroad in London on
Saturday. She married Gerald Poc-
• zik. The reception was held in the
Budapest Dining Room.
Harvey Hayter was admitted to
Clinton Hospital on Friday, having
suffered a heart attack the previous
Sunday. He is doing well and should
soon be home.
