The morning's service was opened
by Nello Romagnoli who led the con-
gregation in choruses and hymn. The
sermon was entitled'Hope.
The words Faith, Hope and Love
are found consistently in Paul's
writings in the New Testament and he:
sees these three concepts - Faith,
Hope and Love, a major part of the
Christian faith.
Love and Faith are derived from
Hope. The term Hope that we use to-
day is completely different from the
Biblical meaning. Hope is used as a
vague possibility in our daily situa-
tions. Because we are so used to us-
ing the word hope as something that
has small chance of happening, we
may think this way also of our Hope
of Heaven. When the Bible uses the
word Hope it means an absolute cer-
tainty. Secure confidence in God's ab-
solute reliableness is what hope is.
David in the Old Testament en-
courages believers to hope in God and
be secure and confident in Him.
David confesses the fact that he has
absolute confidence in God and that
He is reliable.
Titus give Hope as a content and
joyful expectation of our eternal
future. It is not a vague possibility
that is based on our earning it. It is
not insecure optimism but it is
something that we can be secure in
knowing that we can be secure in
knowing that it will be ours.
The word also tells us that by hear-
ing the word of truth, the gospel, we
will know of the hope laid up for us in
Heaven.
Hope is based on the promises of
God and gives security to the future:
When we excercise hope we talk of
future things' If there is no hope,
there is no faith and if a person •is
hopeless there is no love. If there is
no atmosphere of Hope then Faith and
Love die. •
The message of the Gospel is of
great hope. We live in a world where
there is,absolute hopelessness and`
despairity. A person who is hopeless
and despairing eventually thinks of
suicide.
The message of Calvary is a total-
ly positive and a hopeful message that
gives us Hope for now and the future.

Seniors enjoy cat contest
Members of the Sunshine & Busy
Buddies groups were entertained by
the program committee with a funny,
but gruesome, skit and a "cat" con-
test to celebrate their hallowe'en
`meeting on Thursday afternoon.
During the business meeting
chaired by president, Harry Noels, an
invitation was read from the Biddulph
School to attend the Remembrance
Day Service at the Arena on Monday,
Movember 11 at 10:45. Everyone is
welcome to attend.
Cards of thanks were read from
Elizabeth Conlin and Kay Armstrong
and Florence Hodgins thanked the
members, in person, for her card. The
tour convener Mabel F'roats, sent a
message in connection with the trip
to hear the Don Messer Jubilee at
Althouse college on Thursday even-
ing, November 14, leaving the arena
at 7 p.m. with 36 seniors' tickets hav-
ing been ordered. There are a few
tickets available by phoning Friday
evening 227-4879.
United Church news
Jane Forster with Tara, and Anne
Holden with Jane, Mary and Sarah
made people welcome Sunday morn-
ing at Lucan - Clandeboye United
Church service. Wes Stanley read the
Scripture lesson, and Marguerite
McRoberts told the boys and girls a
story about Bobby and Bruce Who
realizeakow important it is to follow
God's way and not take things that
belong to others.
Ruthanne Curtis, along with Mary
Holden and other Junior Helpers
assisted leader Freeda Melanson with
Junior Church which followed stroy
time.
Rev. Brown's sermon theme was
"Life in the Spirit", as he continued
the series on the book of Romans,
chapter 9. The coming of the Holy
Spirit into our lives when we believe
in Christ gives the power to obey god,
and delivers us from fruitless striv-
ing to obey God in our own strength.
The Holy Spirit within us is the
greatest gift God could offer, for it
gives us a new close relationship with
Him and an inner assurance that we
are indeed the loved children of our.
Heavenly Fattier.
But as this point we can lose the
blessing He intends for us if we con-
tinue to follow our own selfish desires.
Instead, we must deliberately choose
to obey His Spirit within us, allowing
Him to direct us. "The Christian life
is not simply a Sundgy stroll with
Jesus," said Mr. Brown. "It is a dai-
ly commitment to follow the Spirit." k
Flowers in the sanctuary were from
the funeral of the late Mrs. Mary
Morkin. The sympathy of the con-
gregation is extended to her family.
Coming Events
The Quitters will be at work each
day this week in the C.E. wing of the
Church. Thursday at 9:45 prayer and
share fellowship continue their study
of the Gospel of Luke. All women of
the community are invited to'attend
this informal discussion group.
Next Sunday, the Royal Canadian
Legion will meet with us for the
Remembrance Day service. Lucan-
Biddulph Public School Choir will
assist.
Contributions of mittens, scarves
and socks for the "Mitten Tree"
would be appreciated during the
month of November, also personal
and household articles to assist the
work of Women's Community House.
The U.C.W.'s annual Snowflake
Bazaar is scheduled for Saturday,
November 30 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.
The cat contest was won by Rose
Atkinson, the Craft prize prize by
Rose Bakker and euchre prizes as
follows: high scores Jean Miller and
Ed Dowdall, lone hands Charlotte
Barker and Murray Carter, and low
scores by Grace Brush and Adrian
Bax. Hallowe'en treats were provid-
ed by Kae and Ed Armstrong,
members of the program committee.
The date of the Christmas dinner
was set for Thursday, December, 12
subject to the Legion Hall being
available and the Auxiliary being
willing to cater on that date.
Forty-five members and friends en-
joyed the bus trip to the Kitchener
Market, Elmira and St. Jacobs on
Saturday, October 26: The
smorgasbord dinner at Bingeman
Park was delicious and the Berkley
Room is highly recommended.
