The other day, I answered a knock
on the door to find a pleasant looking,
but unknown gentleman standing
there. What a surprise, after he'd in-
troduced himself, to find he was a
long lost, thrice removed cousin I
hadn't known existed. He brought in
his family records from the car,
which showed that he and I had the
same great-grandparents, the
original immigrants who came to this
country in the 1800s.
They, George, an Engish Methodist
preacher - farmer, and his French
wife, Mary Anne, had 10 children, five
of whom moved to the same area in
the United States. 1 suppose because
times are hard, and communica,4o
and transportation poor, t .,-
relatives disappeared, and bec:uruel,
as it were, the lost tribe of the family.
But, according to my long lost
cousin they raised families and pro-
spered in the States, keeping to
themselves until he, having recently
retired, set out to track down the
family roots. Interestingly, he lives
.almost directly across Lake Huron
from us, perhaps no more than 60 or
70 miles, as the crow flies. It seemed
opportune, and more than a coin-
cidence, that he appeared just when

There is help available, however;

too, almost every area has a
genealogical society that will assist
you, and many books have been writ-
ten to help you research your roots in
many countries, especially in Europe.
Libraries are good places to start,
and librarians are nearly always
more than eager to assist you. It does
take a lot of time, however. I spent
half a day in the London library,
recently, loolung over micro film cen-
sus records, trying to discover from
what part of England my grandfather
came... without success. However, 1
know he's there some place because
1 did find his name on an early map.
So, 1 will have to set aside a full day
to go through more of the microfilm,
and hopefully find the information 1
-want..
Of course, you can hire people to
research your family for you. The
Family History Services in England
offer a long list of research services,
and they will give you an estimate
