At home, Friday, the locals over- came a four -goal deficit with six unanswered goals in the final stanza to beat the high -flying Clinton Mustangs 9-7. In Brussels Sunday afternoon, the Hawks trailed by only one goal going into the final 20 minutes of play and watched the Bulls score 10 unanswered goals to post a 15-4 drub- bing for the highest number of goals scored against a local Junior "D" team in recent memory. Whiteford sparks rally Sean Whiteford didn't arrive at the rec centre for Friday's game until the end of the second period due to work commitments, but it didn't take him long to make his presence felt in the lineup. The Hawks were trailing 7-3 at the end of the second to the visiting Clin- ton Mustangs and most of the local squad appearedready to accept defeat. However, Whiteford had different ideas and set about to spark the squad as he registered two goals and assisted on three others as the Hawks scored six unanswered goals to post their second win of the season. Whiteford's'linemates for the third period were George Pratt and Steve Gould. Pratt scored twice in the third and Gould notched one to match one Broncos get point in atom hockey The Exeter Broncos could manage only one point in two Shamrock atom category hockey games this week. Wednesday the Broncos and Lucan played to a 4-4 tie and the following night in Strathroy, the home team ek- ed out a 2-1 decision. Against Lucan, the Broncos held a 2-0 first period lead on successful shot by Jason Heywood on an unassisted effort and Jeff Lingard as he con- verted a pass from Mark Brintnell.' Lucan came' roaring back with three straight goals in the middle stanza and early in the third. Scott Smith scored twice and Jeremy Jemic added the single. Near the four minute mark of the final period, Joel Smith and Mark Lynn registered to give the Broncos a one goal margin on the scoreboard. Assisting were Jason Heywood and Steve Farquhar. The tying goal for Lucan with less than two minutes to go came from the stick of Jeremy Jemic on a pass from Paul O'Shea. In the loss to Strathroy the only Ex- eter goal was fired by Mark Lynn on passes from Steve Farquhar and Jason Heywood. Steve McIntyre recorded two assists and helping out on single tallies were Brent Atthill, Brintnell, Gould and Brent Dawson. The Hawks knotted the contest at 6-6 at the 11:05 mark of the third and then Pratt notched the winner with three minutes to go on a play with Whiteford and the latter added the in- surance marker 45 seconds later. Marty Merner worked between the pipes for Exeter and recorded 41 saves. Chris Ladd and Steve Stapleton combined for 31 saves at the other end of the rink. Exeter took eight of the 15 penalties called. Blown away The Hawks were holding their own with the powerful Bulls in Brussels on Sunday until the roof fell in on them in the final period. Exetertrailed 5-4 starting the third and the Bulls netted a couple of quick ones to open that frame and then pot- ted three more on powerplays when Brentfltthill picked up a major and minor penalty and a bench penalty was assessed when another Hawk fired some verbal abuse at the referee. Brussels continued to pour it on with four more after the penalties ex- pired to end up with 10 in the final stanza. Jeff Laporte was the victim of the onslought as he faced a total of 66 shots, while the Hawks were manag- ing only 28. George Pratt continued his steady goal production with a pair and the singles came from Steve Goad and Don Hamilton. Sean Whitefordnotch- ed two assists and singles were add- ed by Gould, Atthill and Dave Skea. The Hawks took 14 of tte 27 penalties assessed in the content.
