The petunias, which have been very straggley, the last few weeks, were beginning to show new life and pro- duce flowers that had an extra brightness about them. Still, 1 knew they had no chance against the im- pending ravages of frost so 1 pulled them out and heaped them on the compost pile. However, at the south side of the house, I couldn't bear to pull out the marigolds that are putting on a last- ditch, stunning burst of colour. They are far larger and more brilliant than they were all summer, as if executing a final blast of beauty before being cut down by the cold weather. Of course, that's.how it's been with the trees, too. On our return trip from Kingston at Thanksgiving, we were almost blind- ed by the sun shining on the scarlet maples and the golden oaks and ashes. The beauty that surrounds us in the fall season seems to remind us that .Try Thc 'Eucr TFiri ft We Fume fu ins for you or .your growing family. Come on in and Shop! Its like a yard sale indoors. Ask for Doreen though the cold blasts of winter may come, they will never have the last word. In a few months, we know those trees that are now shedding their leaves and which appear to be dying, will be stirring with new life. And next a rebirth. We move from some dear, familiar place, and experience a type of dying. But if we're patient, there comes a rebirth as we settle into the new surroundings and find peace of mind, once more. It Seems to me... spring, the earth will again be aglow with bright flowers. It was Nietzsche who said, "Only where there are graves can there be resurrections." How true. So much of what goes on around us, and within us, deals with a kind of death... and Anniversary for Caven Caven Presbyterian Church observed their 124th anniversary on October 27 at the morning service with visitors and friends from Cromarty and Hensall churches, The guest minister was Rev. D.A. Beaton from Knollwood Presbyterian Church in London. His children's story illustrated by a light -powered hand computer, em- phasized the truth of the Christian message - the more it is exposed to Tight the brighter it shines. Special music for the occasion was an anthem sung by the choir "Reach out to your neighbour" and a solo by Mrs. Susan Moore, "I'll walk with God". Mr. Beaton chose as his sermon topic "The Dominion Deposit In- --surance- Corporation" 9n -which -he stressed that we do a lot of things because we have always done them that way - they have become tradi- tions and traditions have stood the test of time. Reflexology, Deep Muscle Therapy 255 Marlborough St., • Exeter, Ontario 235-0828 By appointment only Monday, Tuesday, Friday by Gwyn Whilsmith We lose our job and for awhile our self-confidence dies. We struggle through dark days, but if we pull on our inner resources there can be an awakening, a stirring, as we realize we possess strengths we didn't know we had before to make a new beginning. We lose our partner through death or divorce and again, we pass through the shadows of death. Yet, with God's help, and the love of family and friends, we eventually come through to the light at the end of the tunnel and start a new life. A baby eagle tipped out of the warm security of the nest must surely think it's dying as it plummets to the rocks below, but then, something within it tells it to start flapping its wings, and it finds it is soaring through the blue, up higher and higher into the great freedom of the sky it never could have experienced if it had remained in the nest. It seems to me there is much for us to learn from the'nature around us. God does not desert us when we go through the 'dyings' of our lives. In- stead, he gives us the courage to hold. - on, to dig deep inside ourselves to find the strength that brings us to resur- rections and new beginnings.
