Senior Panthers lose to Vikings
In a very important Huron -Perth
football game Thursday, the Goderich
Vikings blanked the South Huron
senior Panthers by a score of 8-0.
The Vikings gained revenge from
an earlier 15-7 Loss to the Panthers. If
the two teams win this week they will
end in a tie for first place in the league
standings.
The -criteria -used -to -break: a -tie -is --
the spread in points in games played
between the two clubs. As they each
won by eight points, a flip of the coin
was necessary and the Goderich
coach was the winner giving the Vik-
ings home field advantage if the two
teams meet in the championship
game.
If the final scheduled games go as
expected Goderich will meet Strat-
ford Northwestern in one semi-final
round and South Huron will meet
Listowel in the other.
Thursday's game started off much
like the earlier game with each team
being stopped in their first series of
plays. The Vikings were called for un- '
necessary roughing on a third down
punt and then came back to block an
attempted South Huron field goal.
The Panthers could not move the
ball consistently and only great defen-
sive play by safety Rick Gilfillan and
linebackers John Relouw and Steve •
Wilkinson kept Goderich off the
scoreboard.
The Panthers did get down to the
Vikings three yard line, but were call-
ed for holding and a point was miss-
ed when Scott Miller's punt sailed out
of bounds in the end zone.
Late in the second quarter, the Vik-
ings completed a 35 yard pass play
and a 20 yard run resulted in a
touchdown which was converted. in
the second half, the Panther defensive
unit kept the Vikings in their own end
but the offence could still not move
the ball and it was back and forth for
most of the half.
Late in the game, the Vikings com-
pleted a 35 yard pass play and only a
key 4ackle by Scott Bogart saved a
major score. With eight seconds left
on the clock, a Viking field goal at-
tempt went wide, but the Panthers
were called for holding giving the op-
position anothe. chance.
This time the Vikings played it safe
and went for a single point and the
Panthers were unable to kick the ball.
back out.
