Still time to register with
Room for figure skaters
While the new season for the Exeter figure skating club is
underway, there is still plenty of room and time for new skaters.
Anyone wishing to register can call Peter and Agnes Aunger
at 235-2877, Doris Weigand at 235-0814 or the South Huron Rec Cen-
tre at 235-2833.
Skating sessions for beginners is held each Monday and Thurs-
day afternoons between the hours of 4 and 5 p.m. while novice skate
for one hour beginning at 5 p.m., the same days. Intermediate prac-
tice sessions are Mondays and Fridays and the senior and more
advanced performers are on the ice Mondays, Thursdays and
Fridays.
Three fund raising projects are planned for the figure skating
club within the next five months. The first is a skate-a-thon at the
South Huron Rec Centre on Monday, October 28 between the hours
of 4:30 and 5:30 p.m.
All skating club members and their families are urged to par-
ticipate. Each pledge will be based on a skating time of 15 minutes.
The club is sponsoring a dance at the South Huron Rec Centre ,
on January 25, 1986 with Traces supplying the music.
The format of the annual skating carnival will be changed
slightly to a Pop Concert with less emphasis on costumes.
Peter Aunger is president of the figure skating group, Mary
Jane MacDougall is vice-president, Hennie Farwell handles the
secretarial duties and Francis Kints is the treasurer.
A large catch
A recent fishing expedition to the French River proved not only
exciting, but rewarding for two local anglers_ Brian Illman and
Ted Van Roestel landed 'one of the largest sturgeon ever caught
in that area.

It measured six foot, two inches and weighed in at 82 pounds.
That sounds like and is a large fish. We saw it in the Illman garage
with the backbone already deleted. They were told by Indians in
the French River area that the meat would keep better if the
backbone is removed as quickly as possible.
It sounds great to catch a fish of this enormity, but, not so easy
to land. The chore of landing the sturgeon took a total of two hours
and a lot of reeling in. The fish took care of the reeling out. It vir-

tually towed the local fishermen around the lake and when the Line
was extended they would start the motor and catch up again.
Equipment used was an ordinary rod and reel with a 15 pound
test line and a minnow for bait. He must have been overly starved.
Can we say it must have been a fintastic experience for Brian
and Ted and a whale of a true story.

The Exeter Hawks managed only
one point in two weekend outings to
keep them well down in the southern
division of the Western Junior "D"
loop.
The locals came within two and a
half minutes of posting their second
win when they hosted Thedford, Fri-
day, but had to settle for a 2-2 draw.
In Howick on Sunday, the host Op-
timists recorded their first league win
of the year when they doubled up on
the Hawks 84.
This Friday, the Clinton Mustangs
will make their first appearance at
the rec centre after dropping back
from Junior "C" ranking.
The Mustangs have already
established themselves as formidable
opposition and are well up in the
league standings. Sunday night, the
Hawks will trgvel to Brussels to take
on the Bulls.
Browns tally late
The visiting Thedford Browns
scored at the 17:39 mark of the final
period to gain their 2-2 tie with the
Ilawks, Friday. Both teams were
playing a man short when the visitors
tallied.
Exeter took a quick lead in the
game as George Pratt finished off a
play with Scott Bogart and Brent
Dawson at the 3:31 mark of the first.
Thedford got the equalizer early in
the second and the Ilawks regained
the one -goal lead late in the second
when Brent Atthill found the range.

ment, let's not look back, but ahead for better things.
The Jays are in an excellent position of having at least 10
players that should be the nucleus of the lcub for the next seven
or eight years and they are bound to improve with age and
experience.
Around for along time should be pitchers Dave Stieb, Jim Clan-
cy, Jimmy Key and Tom Henke; infielders Willie Upshaw, Tony
Fernandez and Damaso Garcia and outfielders George Bell, Lloyd
Moseby and Jesse Barfield.
With a sprinkling of veterans and more fresh recruits from
the farm system, the Jays should be as good or better than they
were this year. Before anyone says they were not good enough dur-
ing the just concluded season, just remember they were almost
wire to wire leaders in the Americal league eastern division.
The one thing about champions they must be beaten. In the
last few years in this same division, beating of the previous year's
winners was not too difficult to achieve.
Baseball in Japan
A couple of weeks ago we saw a baseball game from Japan
via a satellite dish and found some interesting items. One of the
performers that night was former Montreal Expo Warren Cromar-
tie. The announcers said Cromartie had one year to go on his
Japanese contract and after that was expected to return to North
America.
Mr. Oh, the great home run hitter in Japan was the manager
of one of the teams we saw. One of the pitchers gave the signs to
the catcher to tell whit kind of pitch he was going to throw.
The speed of each pitch was recorded on the bottom left cor-
ner of the screen in kilometres per hour. The fastest pitch was 14i
kilometres which deciphers out to 88.125 miles per hour.
