Page 7
In 1910 the ladies of Zion West com-
munity organized the Woman's Mis-
sionary Society and have continued
meetings ever since.
On (ktober 16 former members and
friends were invited to join with the
present group now known as UCW to
an evening of fellowship and
reminiscing beginning with a
smorgasbord dinner at 6 p.rn.
The anniversary cake was cut by
Mrs. Gladys Hern t the one who has
belonged the longest►, Mrs. Jean
Pooley ) the oldest member) and Mrs.
s
t
Mabel Hern (present). Each lady prethe scripture quotation from ent was asked to introduce herself
and tell a highlight of her Zion connec-
tion. Pro-
verbs

all times and Chapter 18 verse 24". A
ion. Some were humorous, some em-
barrassing and one lady recalled a
very boring study book.
Mrs. Marina Jaques led devotional
based on the theme Friendship using
man that hath friends must show
himself friendly."
Mrs. Dorothy Hern read a poem "If
Jesus Came to Our Ilbuse" and Mrs.
Margaret Hern a solo, "The Gypsy

Mrs. Marjorie Johns, a former Zion
member.
President Mabel Hern introduced
' + ' • the guest speaker, Mrs. Jean Pooley
' and Mrs. Beth Batten both of Exeter.
• i Mrs, Pooley told some very in-
teresting memories at Zion, first of all
t of coming to Zion at the age of 19, to
teach school and boarding with Mr.
' • and Mrs. Andrew who lived where
Lorne and Margaret Hern now live.
While visiting neighbours she met the
one who was to become her husband,
Ted Pooley a wounded soldier con-
valescing after World War I.
In her first year of teaching at Zion
she received $600 and told of walking
to school through bad weather and on
bad roads. She recalled some of the
get togethers of Zion congregation,
especially of the February family gathering, a tradition we still keep.
She recalled walking from Win-
chelsea to Zion to a meeting when not
even horses could get through the
slush. Mrs. Batten recalled some of
the fowl suppers and ice cream
socials in the old church shed.
Mrs. Clarice Hern arranged a
display of old and recent pictures that
were most interesting and told some
of the history of Zion Womens groups.
' R Clarice began her history talk by say-
ing that we are very fortunate to have
all the record books since 1910 when
the WMS was formed with Mrs.
this week. Cutting the cake are Robert Taylor as president. The
for the longest time; and Taylors lived where Harry and
Clarice Hern now live. The society
was organized by Mrs. Wilson of
