They quickly set to work and made chicken corn pie and coconut banana cream pie. While they baked, they had a roll call by naming a recipe that used pastry. After work on the record books they ate the pies for itlnch. Press reported by Angie Zielman. •Next meeting to be at Susan Hayters! Peter .Snell speaker at Crediton UCW By MRS. STAB_PRESZCATOR--.- ..: The sermon topic at Zion United Church was taken from II Timothy 4:1-8 titled "Keeping the Faith." It was Thanksgivng Sunday a day ser aside to thank God for the many things that we should be thankful for, but the minister said we should thank God not only one day of the year, but 365 days of the year. We have so many things in our land of plenty to be thankful for. The ladies of the U.C.W. are pack- ing a bale early in November. 1f you have any used clothing you have no need for, please bring it to the west entrance of the church and place it inside. U.C.W. Meet The October meeting of the U.C.W. was held on Thursday evening Oc- tober 10. Devotions were led by Helen Ratz, Erma Krueger and Mary Ken- ny with Thanksgiving as the theme. Peter Snell was guest speaker and had an interesting message of music and singing and told of many things to be thankful for. Leila Finkbeiner presided for the business. An invitation was read from the C.W.L. ladies of Mt. Carmel Church to come to their fall bazaar on November 5 at 8 p.m. Lunch was -ser-ved-=-by Mary'Draise Marie` Fydenchuk and Laurene Wein. Personals Mr. and Mrs. Stan Preszcator at- tended the Steele -Thornton wedding in Stratford on Saturday at Zion Lutherarf church. Dinner and recep- tion were held at Sebringville. Mrs. Carl (Dorothy) Ohymer Grand Bend returned home Wednes- day from University Hospital Londor. and Mrs. Leonard (Gladys) Wein returned home Friday from Strathroy Hospital where she has been a patient for the past two weeks. Sympathy of the community goes out to the families of the late Donald Dinney. Don passed away Friday, Oc- tober 11 at South Huron Hospital, Ex- eter. Don was well known and was well liked by all who knew him. Ile leaves his wife Marie (Clark) and seven children. Congratulations to Al and Note Smith who celebrated their 46th wed- ding anniversary on Monday October 14. Week -end visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Jim Laye were Alvin Sims, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Sims and Todd, Mrs. Geraldine King and Darcy. Sault Ste. Marie. Also a Thanksgiving guest was Jim Edwards. Varna hunters bag moose By Mary Chessell Dean and Paul Aldwinkle's party got the biggest moose they have ever seen while hunting near Temiskam- ing. Getting it out of the bush, even with the help of an ATV, was quite a chore. Bonnie Roy is taking a refresher Dietary Supervisor's Bourse at Cen- tralia College. Dan and Jody Eckel and little Jen- nifer of Spruce Grove, Alberta, arriv- ed home to spend the Thanksgiving holiday and this week with his parents, Jack and Geraldine. Ivan and Marg McClymont con- tinued their tradition of decorating the church for Thanksgiving with the fruits of the harvest and colorful bran- ches of maple, adding much to the beauty of the service. Rev. Brown's sermon was "Thanks -Living". Next Sunday Rev. Norman Gibson of Stratford will speak at Goshen An- niversary. The service begins at 11:00 and there is no church service or Sun- day School at Varna. On Thursday evening Goshen United Church Women entertained members of surrounding churches. Rev. Rob Witmer showed slides and spoke on the church's work in Japan. particularly where he is ministering at the Dohoku Centre at Nayoro and at the church in Okoppe, on the nor- thern island of Hokkaido. His pictures of that area showed a resemblance to the country here, with grazing herds of Holsteins and modern farm buildings. Snow piles upon roofs in the winter. Their weather comes from Siberia, and the snowfall is heavier than here, but it's clean and beautiful. Temperatures go as low as -35C.Spik- ed tires are necessary, as roads are never sanded. The population density of Hokkaido is similar to southern Ontario. Agriculture and fishing are the primary occupations. Former mining and lumbering centres have become ghost towns. Railway service has been drastically cut and many people are leaving the land. Merchants and farmers are struggling with reces- sion, and off -farm income is necessary for many to survive. Only one percent of the Japanese people are baptized Christians - a number that changes little, although about ten percent live by Christian values and the Bible is a best-seller. The lack of new members can be ex- plained by a Japanese saying, "The nail that sticks out is hammered down." They don't wish to be different from ever)one else. Those who do belong show a commitment way beyond what is normal here. A new church costing about $60,000 (it includes a residence) was built at Okoppe in 1983 after meeting in a kindergarten for thirty years. Only ten people belong to that church, yet they borrowed $25,000 and will have it paid for by the end of this year. They did receive help from 95 urban churches in Tokyo, and have one member who is a rather wealthy doctor. The church in Nayoro is 75 years old. One quarter of the people who at- tend are mentally ill. Many of these live or work at the Dohoku halfway house and workshop, as there is no government welfare after they leave hospital. The workshop was built by church work camps in the summer of 1984 with financial assistance from local governments and Japanese Christians. Activities range from snow shovelling in winter to vegetable growing on rented land, carpentry and bottling and marketing honey. There is also a centre to :are for children after school until their parents finish work. Two hundred and fifty people ages six to '60 study English at the Dohoku Centre. A Three Love School -for farmers - love for God, human beings and the soil is held there, too. Dr. Makoto iliura was its founder. Great interest was shown in the Japanese people and their lifestyle. with many questions asked of Rob. Margaret Elliott introduced Rob and he was thanked by Marjorie Ilayter. The meeting began with Thanksgiving worship and music. and ended with a social gathering in the Sunday School room. The church was beautifully decoraletl by Joyce Armstrong. Tom and Barb ('onsitt's new house arrived on Friday. They're moving to their place immediately south of where they live now on the Babylon line. it's good to see new houses going up in the community as people move to make way for their sons to take over. as the ('onsitts and the Stephensons are the kind of people we wouldn't want to lose to some other place. USBORNE STUDENTS ELECT -- The 1985-86 student council at Usborne Central School was named recently. Seated from the left are president Danny McCarter and vice-president Debra Pfaff. Back, secretory Kerry Manders and treasurer Gerry Edwards.
