However, the glory was short-lived as the locals were drubbed 13-2 by the southern division leading Belmont Bombers in another home game, Sunday. The Hawks will host Thedford Browns on Friday night and then travel to Howick for a Sunday rematch with the Optimists. Several of the local juniors and coaches came down with stomach problems following the previous weekend's games and suffered from attacks of vomiting and diarrhea. It was thought at first that a bug may have been passed via the team water bottles, but other incidents have also been reported in the area and the cause remains only speculative. • In Friday's meeting between the two winless squads, the Hawks out- scored the visiting Howick crew 3-2 in each of the first two periods and then held on to the two -goat margin by answering both visiting goals in the thirds. Goalie Jason VanHaarelm was one of the standouts for the Hawks as he turned aside 45 shots as the Optimists dominated play throughout much of the contest. Both teams spent a considerable portion of the game playing with less than the full allotment of players as the Hawks took 22 of the 36 penalties. called, including fighting majors to Sean Whiteford and Steve Gould. Both squads netted four goals on powerplays. Dave Skea, Scott Bogart and George Pratt potted twQ each for the Hawks with the single markers com- ingoff the sticks of Steve McIntyre and Don Hamilton.• Pratt added three assists for a five - point night, while Skea and Brian - Quinn contributed two assists each. Single assists were recorded by Brian Blackburn and Whiteford. VanHaarlem was at his best in the third period -when he turned aside 19 HULLY GULLY The secona race or the season was again at Hully Gully, the temperature was much cooler October 13 and the competition greater with more sleds out to race. Again, the Phazer finish- ed well getting a second in B stock and a second in C stock. Brian raced the SRX in mod stock 3 and had a third place finish. Perfect shot David Van Allen with a perfect score of 25 was the winner in Sunday's regular shoot at the claybird gun club. John Morgan was second at 23. Jody Mosurinjohn and Russ Beaver had identical scores of 21 good for third spot. They were followed by Rusty Gibson 20, Fred Brintnell 19, Grant Hodgert 17 and Russ Brintnell 16. of the 21 shots the Howick crew pep- pered at him in an attempt to whittle the lead. Bombers bomb The Belmont Bombers showed why they're rated as one of the top teams in the league as they cruised to a con- vincing 13-2 thrashing of the locals on Sunday. The Bombers out -scored the Hawks 5-1 in both the first and third periods and netted three unanswered tallies in the griddle frame. Marty Merner was peppered with shots from every angle as the free- wheeling Bombers had 68 shots on net, while the Hawks managed only 28 at the other end of the rink. Brent Atthill and George Pratt con- nected on powerplay goals for the Hawks with Ian Munroe, Scott Bogart and Steve Gould picking up the assists. Former Hawk Steve Batten scored once for the Bombers, who netted five powerplay goals and one short- handed. The Hawks again led the penalty parade before a sparse crowd as they sat out 16 of the 28 penalties called by Ray Richards. 011ie's Best still best, 011ie's Best swept five points in Fri- day'sregular, play in the Exeter Legion mixed dart league to maintain their hold on first place with a total of 19 points. Shuffleboard now underway The Exeter shuffleboard club is alive and well, thanks to the inspira- tion of Lorne Marshall. He went to the recreation centre and asked for space and time so that anyone in Exeter and surrounding district could play shuffleboard. It was he, who gathered a group of men to paint two courts on the floor of the rec centre. Because of his ef- r forts the first meeting of interested people was a huge success. A club was formed with Lorne Mar- shall as president, vice president Marshall Dearing, secretary - treasurer Ernest Ross. Two more courts had to be added shortly after the club was started and for "Sport- sfest '85", two more courts making a total of.six courts. This past summer, shuffleboard was played every Wednesday after- noon and from now through the winter the club returns to its three days a week, Tuesday and Wednesday mix- ed and Thursday men. Games start 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. The annual meeting was held Oc- tober 9 at the arena. New officers: past president, Lorne Marshall, presi- dent Marshall Dearing, vice- president Grace Farquhar, second vice president Harold Davis and secretary -treasurer Jean Hern. A fee of two dollars will be charg- ed to all members to pay for.the rent of the hall. Initial joining fee for any new members will remain at $10.
