Selections of division champs in national hockey league
While baseball is a high priority for sports fans'all across North
America and especially in Canada, the hockey season is well
underway.
As in the just concluded major league baseball season, there
will likely be plenty of surprises and disappointment during the
1985-86 NHL season.
The two teams who were battling in the World Series about
a year ago,the Detroit Tigers and the San Diego Padres were not
in contention really since the all star break.
We don't want to jinx the Blue Jays for next season, but in the
past four years in the American league east the team winning the
division the year before finished third or fourth in the next.
We doubt if this will happen to the Jays as they have lots of
youth going for them. The likes of Moseby, Barfield, Bell, Garcia
and Fernandez are just coming into their own.
Getting back to hockey, the New Jersey Devils are off to a fly-
ing start and could be a pleasant surprise for their fans.
The great hors generated by the Detroit Red Wings spending
of lots of money during the summer months hasn't paid off in their
first three games.
One thing Detroit owner Mike Ilitch has going for him is coach
Harry Neale. Besides having the best one -lines in the NHL, Neale
is probably the best Red Wing coach since Sid Abel.
The Red Wings may be the only reason the Toronto Maple

In a quick look at our crystal ball we will make a few selec-
tions. In the Adams division we will go with the Quebec Nordiques,
the Chicago Black Hawks in the Norris, the Philadelphia Flyers
in the Patrick division and the Edmonton Oilers to repeat in the
Smythe with the Winnipeg Jets a close second.
While major league baseball has really caught on here in the
north, hockey may also be going in the opposite direction, south.
A 16,000 seat arena is due for completion in Miami by the 1987-88
season.
There are five new coaches in the NHL this year. They are
Harry Neale at Detroit, Ted Sator with the Rangers, Jean Perron
with the Canadiens, Jim Schoenfeld at Buffalo, Butch Goring with
the Boston Bruins and Lorne Henning at Minnesota.
Good football hopes
The play of Ron Bogart's South Huron senior football team has
raised hopes of another championship year.
The Panthers have chalked up a couple of lopsided wins so far.
Their big test comes today, Thursday when they travel to (oderich.
The winner of this game will take over first place and be
assured of home field advantages in the upcoming playoffs.
Mohawks win exhibition in convincing fashion
In their second exhibition game of
the season the Exeter Mohawks
dominated play over the Arthur
Tigers at the South Huron Rec Cen-
tre Saturday night, but, couldn't put
the pesky Tigers away until the final
20 minutes of play.
The Mohawks scored seven times in
the third period and posted a 11-2 win.
The return game of this pre -season
series was played in Arthur last night.
The first regularly scheduled game
for the Mohawks in the OHA In-
termediate C league will go at the
South Huron Rec Centre Saturday
night at 8:30 p.m. when the Harriston
Blues provide the opposition. The
Harriston club is dropping from "B"
to "C" ranks and should give the
locals a real battle. The Blues were
"C" champs in 1981-82 before moving
up one step.
The Hillsburgh Royals will be in
town Sunday night with game time at
7:30 p.m. The Royals have the reputa-
tion of a hard hitting team and took
807 minutes in penalties a year ago
when they finished in third place
behind Elora and New Hamburg.
Mohawks coach Jack Chipchase
has a current roster of 22 players and
has a couple of possible additions.
They are left winger Tim Orleman
from Conestoga College now working
at V & G and former Western
Mustang Steve Geddes.
Missing from Saturday night's
lineup were Bill Glover and Cam Doig
