Project of Huron -Perth quilters
Proceeds from quilt provhles 2,476 for McDonald house
The 60 -member Huron -Perth
Quilters Guild donated $2,476 to
Ronald McDonald House at their
regular October meeting in the
Kirkton-Woodham Community Cen-
tre. The group, formed last year, rais-
ed the money through the first big
project they have tackled, making
. and raffling a beautiful full-size quilt
done in the Grandmother's Fan
design.
Carroll Sturgeon, a member of the
speakers' committee of Ronald
McDonald House, accepted the che-
que from ticket committee chairman
Butsy Parkinson.
While thanking the ladies for their
generous gift, Mrs. Sturgeon said the
12 -bedroom home on the grounds of
Victoria Hospital's Westminster
Campus was unique in North
American - the London Ronald
McDonald House was debt -free when

it opened in June. The $1,000,000 cost
of building and furnishings had
already been paid.
Mrs. Sturgeon said "the House that
love built" is serving southwestern
Ontario as a home away from home,
providing a place to stay for the
parents of children receiving medical
treatment at the nearby children's
hospital.
A recreation area for teens in the
basement has been named The Lion's
Den in honour of the cheques sent
from Lions and Lioness Clubs across
Ontario to pay for that part of the
facility. •
Mrs. Sturgeon said many fund-
raising events are planned to raise
money for the annual $75,000
operating costs and proposed four-
bedroom addition. A paid manager
lives in a two-bedroom apartment in
the House and is on call 24 hours a
day.
As a permanent record of the
quilters' generosity, Mrs. Sturgeon
promised the organization's name
will be inscribed on one of the brass
acorns that hang on an oak tree in the
foyer of the building.
Mrs. Sturgeon drew the name of
Murray Cardiff, Brussels, as the win-
ner of the quilt.
Preceptor chapter underway
The Exeter Preceptor Chapter. of
Beta Sigma Phi, Beta Theta, officially
began this year's activities with a
supper at the Golden City Restaurant
September 17.
The members then travelled to the
home of Pat Patterson where presi-
dent Maida Gaiser officiated the
Order of the Rose ceremony in honour
of Maude Connon.
This was followed by the Preceptor
Ritual for Mary Jane MacDougall,
Joy Kerslake, Susan Kraftcheck, Jay
Skillender, Heather Rogers, Lynda
-----Deelstra-attd Dorcas Wein. -Vice-
president Pat welcomed the new
members to the Chapter.
A report regarding the success of
Sportsfest was given and a special
thank you went to Verla Russell and
Phyllis Johnson for their efforts in
this endeavour. Verla, similarly,
organized our concession booth at the
Exeter Grey's ball tournament and
the Chapter members were quite
pleased with the results.
Jay Skillender and Susan Kraft -
check presented the international
theme "A Walk In the Sunlight" and
the chapter theme of "Welcome to My
Word". Members were given an op-
portunity of submitting their plans for
the upcoming programs. The meeting
was followed by a delicious lunch
prepared by the Executive.
October 1 members met at the
home of Glenda Wagner. Following
business Donna Webster introduced
the guest speaker, Gwen Watson, who
has been blind since early childhood.
She shared with us many useful ar-
ticles used by the lbind and made
several suggestions for helping others
who have visual problems. This was
Caven ladies
mark season
The Thanksgiving and fall Thank
offering meeting of Caven P.C.W. was
the theme of the October meeing with
our Presbyterial visitor Mrs. Robert
McColl of Goderich and the Gordon
Auxiliary as guests. -
--Mrs.--Cann;- Mrs: -Learn- and -Mrs.
Henderson arranged a very attractive
table of desserts served before the
formal meeting. The devotional
prepared by Mrs. Stanlake, centred
around the theme, "We are
grateful". She was assisted by Mrs.
Cann and Mrs. Ersman.
The Gordon Auxiliary favoured
with two choral numbers. "When you
are standing alone" and "Bless This
House".
Our Glad Tidings, Presbyterian
Record and Miss Agnes Hislop had
already provided us with much in-
terest in Guyana - so we were thrill-
ed again to hear yet another entirely
different account of life in that coun-
try. After bringing greetings from
Stratford Huron Mrs.McColl chose to
share a letter written by her
daughter's friend as she travelled and
visited in that South American
country.
After dispensing with the business
the president announced that the
November meeting would be the an-
nual meeting with election of officers
and reports of all secretaries.
an excellent lead up to CNIB month.
Lunch was prepared by hostess
Glenda.
