Canadians are not known for their
sense of humor.
We have trouble laughing at
ourselves. We take it all too seriously.
But we should be jumping out from
under our hats with laughter and joy
when we compare ourselves with
other countries in the world.
We can chuckle at the favorite
game in the House of Commons these
days: Name That Tuna -- a rancid
joke, eh? that is the most serious hap-
pening in many weeks in our govern-
ment. We are not fighting armed
guerrillas. We are not frightened of a
crazed despot taking over the reins of
government.
We can walk kown the streets of
most of our major cities in relative
safety.
.We are not being kept like
mushrooms: covered in horse
manure and in the dark by a
"benevolent" government. We are
not keeping 20 million people in
slavery because their skin is black.
We can get into a car and drive
anywhere across this vast land and
never get stopped by anyone in
uniform as long as we conform to the
laws. Nobody can come barging into
our homes on a fishing trip to find
evidence against us. We are not
awakened in the middle of the night
and spirited away by the state.
Our children can look forward to
one of the best education systems in
the world, right from kindergarten to
university. Itmay not be perfect but
is is right up there with the finest.
Although our higher halls of learn-
ing are suffering from a lack of
money, gur children, even though we
may not have the money to send
them, can get financial help to attend
those higher halls of learning. It may
not be easy but they can get a degree
or a diploma or a certificate if they
want one.
I constantly thank God I was born
in a country where I can take my
grandkids for a horseback ride once
or twice a week. We have never been
able to afford big homes on a country
estate but we have been able to keep
horses for our kids and our kids' kids.
When ' the two oldest gals got in-
terested in horses, we were living in
town but we managed to find a
hospitable farmer within walking
distance who kept our first saddle
horse.
Ten years later, we had a couple of
acres in the country and an old shed
we laughingly refer to as a horse

where families will love and laugh
and learn together.
It is a country like no other with a
broad and beautiful future ahead of
it, a country peopled by a mosaic of
races and colors and creeds whocan,
if they try, teach the whole world to
sing in harmony.
I'm thankful to be living here. I'm
giving thanks this weekend that I
have friends and neighbors -- and,
most of all, family -- who love me like
a rock.
We may make fun of those who
govern but I would like to thank them
all, from the municipal to the federal
level, for helping make this the
greatest country in the world.
And a happy thanksgiving to you,
too.
barn. We have raised and trained a
few horses since then to provide fun
and a sense of responsibility to all
three of our girls and the four
grandkids.
Regular readers of this column
know I spend much tithe conversing
with the youngest grandchild, Kaitlin,
while we ride the back roads. It is a
great country that provides so many
thrills.
My point in all this is that we are
not rich, never will be, yet we have a
life rich in people and memory.
We live in a country where no one
starves, where opportunity is endless,
where happiness and freedom from
fear is normal, where culture is en-
couraged, where most tables this
weekend will be groaning with food,

Beware of silo gas
It's silo filling time -- anq it's time
to remember that the deadry nitrogen
dioxide (NO2) silo gas may be present
in a tower silo - for three to four weeks
after it is filled. Any type of stress
during the growing season can
dramatically increase the potential
for the ensiled material to give off
nitrogen dioxide gas. The dry weather
of this summer, followed by the warm
wet period may increase the in-
cidence of silo gas this fall. Beware.
Indicators of the presence of NO2
include a reddish brown haze and a
strong "bleach -like" odour on the silo
surface or in the immediate silo area.
However, you may have silo gas
without these signs.
A recent survey in Minnesota
revealed that 50 per cent of conven-
tional tower silos contained silo gas
at the time of ensiling. Only three per
cent of farmers in the study knew
anything about the danger posed by
NO2.
It is best to stay out of a freshly fill-
ed silo unless you are 100 per cent cer-
tam that deadly gases are not present.
If it is essential to go into the struc-
ture, entry should only be undertaken
by a trained individual wearing a self-
contained breathing apparatus.
Beware of the strong possibility
that lethal gases may be present,
REGARDLESS of the crop being en-
siled. Blurred vision, a burning sen-
sation in the mouth and nostrils, and
,a feeling of drowsiness are typical
