Eunice Aikenhead, Jr. Past Noble Grand, also took part First SHYFC rally of season The first Y.F.C. rally for the season was held Saturday night October 5 at the Brucefield school with a real good crowd. Don Westlake, Director in the chair, was in charge of the rally. He opened by singing the Chorus "I get so thrilled with Jesus" with Sharon Parker at the piano. Pastor Archie Robertson of Egmondville opened with prayer. The group of Bible Quizzers con- sisting of Murray Rundle, Exeter; Brian Steckle, Zurich; Roxanne Mar- tin, Zurich; Christine Westlake, Bayfield; Vicki Pentland, Dungan- non; Melonie Van Patter, Bayfield and Nancy Ackersville, Stratford, who had attended the Circle Ranch at Delevan, new York on July 26, 27 and 28 gave a review of their quizzing on Romans 8. They came in to the auditorium giving the Y.F.C. call. They were also wearing their Red T- shirt Y.F.C. and their name inscrib- ed on them, which were very attractive. The chorus "Praise The Name of Jesus" was sung before Ron introduc- ed the speaker Mr. Maury Blair from Teen Challenge, Toronto. He gave his life story, how he came from a broken home and was an abused child. He also told about his work in .Toronto and closed the Rally with prayer. Next Rally will be on Saturday November 2 at the school, with show- ing of the film "Never Ashamed". The December Rally will feature Rev. Larry Marshall of Shallow Lake. Try to attend these Rallies as they are for the whole family. Everyone is welcome. Unit.3 Unit 3 held their October meeting at Hensall United Church on Tuesday. The worship was conducted by Ardys Glenn, the theme being "Thanksgiv- ing". After reading Psalm 731 the hymn "We plough the Fields" was sung. Dorothy Parker presided, welcom- ed everyone and read a poem "Golden Glory". The roll call was answered by "Something to be Thankful for". A Thanksgiving hymn "Come Ye Thankful People" was sung and the meeting closed with the Benediction. Hostesses were Beatrice Munn and Sarah Dick. Unit 4 Meets Thanksgiving was the theme of the meeting of Unit 4 of Hensall United Church, Thursday. Leader Nan Brit- ton opened the meeting with a verse "God is in Every Tomorrow". Sadie Hoy spoke on the Golden Years of Life in her devotions. The life that has been filled, loving and being loved, makes the passage of years a won- drous thing in God's beautiful world. The roll call was answered with 12 members being present, 49 .visits reported. Nan Britton remembered Susan Purdy who passed away this month. A moment of silence , was observed and prayer. Myrtle Sherritt gave the treasurer's report. Mary Roobol reported three birthday cards, one get.well, and one sympathy card sent. The offering was received by Isobel Rogerson and dedicated by Nan. .The General meeting was be Mon- day, October 7. Hilda Payne gave a report on the Regional Rally at Dashwood. Mrs. White of Birr spoke on her trip to Israel, which was interesting and informative. Nellie Riley read an amusing poem on "Let Your Pastor Know". The point was well made that we all expect help from our pastor, even though we have never informed him that we have a problem. Hilda Payne continued the study of the native Indian entitled "Land Claims unravelling the Myths". Aboriginal Rights belong to the Indian since they were the orginal people in Canada. When the Europeans came they negotiated treaties with the native Indians for parcels of land in pursuit of oil, minerals etc. The land still belonging to the Indian people has been used willfully as a result the native hunting, fishing grounds have been ruined. The Indians are fighting to retain their own land. The meeting closed with a hymn and the Benediction. A bountiful lunch was served by Dorothy Mickle and Myrtle Sherritt. Upcoming events The Fall Zone Rally for Seniors will be held at the Stanley Community Complex, Varna, Thursday, October 17. Registration will be from 12 - 1 p.m. Registration fees will be $2.00. The Golden Agers business meeting w,ill be Monday, October 21 at 7 o'clock. A fashion show will follow at 8:30. The Exercise Classes which were held at the Town Hall every Tuesday afternoon will be discontinued. About people you know Rev. McDonald attended the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. George Drehmann in Wingham United Church on Sunday afternoon. Mrs. William McEwen of Edmon- ton is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Smith and also visited with other local relatives. Rev. and Mrs. Harold Currie, Strat- ford, and Rev. Stan McDonald were Sunday dinner guests with Mrs. laird Mickle. Lodge officers District Deputy President Leona Connelly of Huron District 23 and her staff were guests at the Amber Rebekah Lodge on Wednesday even- ing for the purpose of installing the of- ficers for the ensuing term. Mrs. Margaret McCutcheon read the Com- mission. Mrs. Barb McCutcheon was Deputy Marshall. Mrs. Nell Scott and Mrs. Sharon Freeman sang duets; Mrs. Verna Thomas was pianist for the installation. Mrs. Lois Jones was installed as Noble Grand and Mrs. Bonnie Upshall as Vice Grand. Eunice Aikenhead was given the chair of the Past Noble Grand. The D.D.P spoke to the members on "Happiness and Smil- ing" and outlined the President's ac- tivities for the year. She was presented with a gift by P.G. Eunice Aikenhead. During the business of the lodge a donation was voted to the C.G.I.T. A delicious lunch was served follow- ing the meeting. Announces candidacy Sadie Hoy has announced her inten- tion to try for a seat on Hensall coun- cil in the November election. Queensway Nursing Home This week our volunteer minister was Rev. Hawley. We had 38 residents down in the Activity room to attend the service. Rev. Hawley also brought along five volunteers who were a real help. Pianist was Mr. Robert Cameron. Joanne Wareham, Pat Down, Lori Shapton and Dorothy Grainger helped the residents with the hymn books. Many of our residents spent as much time as possible out -doors this week as we probably won't have many nice days ahead. The Nursing Home residents en- joyed music with their lunch on Thursday as Lorne Johnston played his fiddle in the Activity Room. Thank you, Lorne, for the lovely back ground music. On Thursday evening several residents enjoyed our weekly movie called "The Juggler," a story of a young visually handicapped boy who becomes friends with a young beggar who juggles for money. On Friday our ladies enjoyed a "Ladies Hour" where they had their make-up and fingernails done, along with their afternoon tea. It was very enjoyable and the ladies looked lovelier than ever afterwards. Branch 468 This past month the Hensall branch of the Royal Canadian Legion held an honours and awards evening imcon- junction with the Diamond Jubilee year. Those of our members receiv- ing a 40 -year pin were: Howard Adkins, Bob Baker, "Doc" Cameron, John Goddard, Ray McKinnon, Jack O'Connor, Bob Peck, Al Scholl, Jack Simmons, Don Travers, 'Ron, Mock, Jim Taylor, Howard Smale and John McAllister. Five Diamond Jubilee Medals were presented to members of the Ladies Auxiliary and Ten to the Branch. Comrades Ray McKinnon, Howard Smale, Frank Forrest and Charlie Cooper were made Life Members. Comrade Ted Taylor was made a Meritorius Life Member. Congratula- tions to all these Comrades. Membership David Smale would like to remind you that the Early Bird Campaign is underway so please see Dave or his assistants, Comrades Ted Taylor or Sharon Fink, or pay at the Branch as soon as possible; it would be nice to receive the Early Bird Pla- que again. Tickets for the Remembrance Day Banquet are no,w on sale. It will be held at the arena again this year. This year in conjunction with the Diamond Jubilee, the Branch will be honouring the Overseas World War II Veterans. Our next meeting is tonight and remember this is the last meeting before Remembrance Day. Our sympathy is extended to Joyce Willert and family in the recent Toss of a beloved husband and father. United Church The United Church was filled on Sunday morning when World Wide Communion Sunday was celebrated. Mr. McDonald spoke on the subject "Great Day in the Morning". He spoke of the needs around the world today. "Do you know what it is like to look back and see that there never was a day when you did not feel the weight of some tyranny upon you and then look ahead and see nothing but the continuence of that burden?" he said. "There is a hunger for hope in the world, and we can bring some hope to these people." The children's story was based on the meaning of the Communion Ser- vice when Mr. McDonald told them that their parents would be receiving the bread and wine while they were in Sunday School and what it means to receive Communion. Mary Moffatt was the organist for .the service, and Tim Mann, Chuck Mallette, Glen Slade and Darryl Preszcator were the ushers. For the Communion Service Mary Lou Hyde and Sharon Wurm assisted Mr. McDonald and John Rowcliffe, Barbara , Gackstetter, Chuck Mallette, Ross Riley, Clair Hoffman, Eileen Rannie, Gary Kyle and Lorna Spencer served the Communion. The flowers at the front of the church were placed In honour of the marriage of Cheryl Fuss and Jeff Huntus which took place in the church on Saturday. Rev. McDonald, assisted by Elders Audrey Christie and Dorothy Brint- nell, served Communion to the members of their congregation and their friends at the Bluewater Rest Home on Thursday of this week. Carmel Presbyterian Rev. Kenneth Knight conducted Ho- ly Communion in Carmel Presbyerian Church on Sunday in keeping with the World wide Commu- nion. He spoke on "Known In the Breaking of Bread". Miss Carolyn Love presided at the organ for the service of song. The An- nual Bazaar will be held on Saturday November 2 at 2 p.m. The P.C.W. met at Ferguson Apiaries on Monday evening. Thanksgiving service will be observ- ed next Sunday at the usual hour. Champion timer Jim Dickins was back on his Hully Gully Honda after a three-week rest. He won the season Championship at Hully Gully on Saturday, then travell- ed to Acton on Sunday where the track was very muddy. He placed a strong fourth in his first race and was running a very good fourth in his_se- cond race when his bike watered out with only 2 laps to go. This gave Jim sixth overall for the day. Jim will be back at Hully Gully for the last race of the year Sunday October 20. 4.1 Hensall Figure Skating Club Skating Season Begins Tues., October 15 CFSA CAN. - Skate program 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. CFSA CAN. - Figure Skate Seniors 6:45 - 8:30 p.m. LEARNING 1S FUN — Hensall Nursery School has purchased o Com- modore 64 with proceeds from the Sharon, Lois and Bram concert. The school is one of the few in Ontario to acquire a computer. Teacher Liz James watches Ryan Alexander at the console, while Gordon Rod - ford awaits his turn. The computer will be in the Hensall Library for use by other children during school holidays. The panda stand was built by Ken Johnson.. Attention!
