was enjoyed to the music of Whisky

On the previous weekend they were
treated to dinner at the Bayview
Restaurant by close . friends and
relatives, followed by a social even-
ing at the home of Jim and Kate Keys.
Shower
On Sunday, Pat Taylor hosted `an
Evans family shower for. Brenda
Dowson. Brenda received one very
unique gift as the result of a joke she
had shared with Barry Taylor for
some time. The card said "Where's
the Beef?" The answer was in a
decorated baby calf standing outside
the window, a gift from Pat and
Barry.

Ruby Hill gave an interesting ac- '
count of a week she and Gordon had
spent in Newfoundland in early
September. Gordon had a two-day
meeting of the Economic Council of
Canada in St. John's, and took advan-
tage of the trip to learn more about
the people in that area.
They soon learned that motels and
restaurants are scarce outside of St.
John's, but bed and breakfast places
gave them a chance to talk with peo-
ple. Small places in Newfoundland
are called "communities" rather
than villages.
In Calvert, where they stayed with
Mrs. Sullivan, they noticed there were
a lot of ponies. Most families have one
to haul their supply of firewood. Two-
way radios are now used to keep in
touch with fishermen, and govern-
ment health care and pensions are
gratefully appreciated. Another cou-
ple they stayed with was restoring an
abandoned lighthouse.
•Mrs. Legge of Ileart's Delight and
lived in Toronto for a short time years
ago, but moved back to New-
foundland to raise her children in a
better environment. In Conception
Bay they stayed in a high class place
with exceptior Illy good cooking and
several other ,uests. Doctors from St.
John's come there to rest and relax.
Gordon and Ruby talked to David
and Marion Pitt and attended Gower
United Church in St. John's where the
late Rev. Pitt had ministered. He was
a minister in Varna for a time, where
he and his wife are fondly
remembered.
There were no supermarkets in the
small communities, just a conve-
nience store and usually a Sears
catalogue store. Houses are frame,
painted every year or two because of
the harsh weather. The land in the St.
John's area is unsuitable for crops
and lawns are uncut. Cod is a staple
food served most places where they
stayed. Every kitchen has a

Harvey and Maureen Hayter,
Wilfred Chuter and Aldie Mustard en-

last weekend in September. There
was plenty of recreation and enter-
tainment, and a lake cruise from
Dorset to Huntsville and back to the
Lodge near Dwight. The fall colours
were gorgeous last week.
We were almost to North Bay, and
from the Huntsville area north the
hills were a riot of every shade of red,
green and gold, the best we have ever
seen.
