New rule for fastball tourneys helps in speeding play
A new ruleused in a number of fastball tournaments this sum-
mer is designed to speed up the game and do away with long ex-
tra inning games.
If the score is tied at the end of regulation play, each team
in the first inning sends the player who was the last out in the
previous inning to second base as a runner. This sure gives both
teams excellent chances to score.
In the weekend ladies fastball action, the Exeter Greys won
a game in extra innings using this system.
Congratulations go to Janet Buchanan and Lynne Farquhar
and the rest of the Greys on winning the ladies fastball title with
a final game win over Blanshard, a team they Lost to earlier in
the event.
A good penalty
It was interesting to learn last week of a decision handed down
by an Ottawa judge in a case against a man who wa3 charged with
assaulting a hockey referee.
The fan was given a conditional discharge, put on probation
for two years, ordered to take a course on refereeing and referee
at least 10 houseleague or minor hockey games.
After being in charge of 10 games at any level of hockey this
fan will learn his lesson and soften his abuse for officials.

Castoffs doing well
This year there are about 38 former Canadian football league
players competing in the National Football League south of the
border.
A large number of these are playing key roles with a number
of clubs. The standouts are Warren Moon who seems to have
revitalized the Houston from his quarterback position and
coach Bud Grant who is in the midst of creating a miracle with
the Minnesota Vikings.
Grant came back to Minnesota this season after the club was
worse than terrible in 1984 and although two games do not a season
make, he appears to have the Vikings back on the right track.
Grant is not the only coach to bring out miracles. The other
is Darryl Rogers at the helm of the Detroit Lions. Many of the
Detroit media made light of Rogers when he was hired out of an
Arizona University.
The key to Detroit wins in recent years has been Billy Sims,
but Rogers has been able to fashion a pair of wins without the help
of Sims who is still on the injured list.
Song helped
Lee Paul tells us that the Paul Brothers and Shit are
responsible for the good showing by the Blue Jays on the we kend
in New York.
Their comedy routine about the Jays was telecast across the
United States Wednesday, night on the Nashville Music network
and was seen by several area residents by way of satellite dishes.
It's too bad the Pauls could not have been at the Yankee
Stadium Friday night to sing our National Anthem. The Canadians
at the game were doing more laughing than being upset at the way
the song was murdered. In years past the Yankees had a
Murderers Row, now they butcher our anthem. Oh, well, we won
the ball game anyway.

ago but this time second place Exeter
III was a little better and came away
with a 3-0 win.
Scorers for Exeter III were
Sivichay Sengkhounmany, Mark
"Beef" Foster and Dan Martins. The
win set up the grudge match between
Exeter III and Lucan, both teams
unbeaten during the season, but
Lucan winning the league
championship.
Exeter III however got their
revenge as they easily defeated the
Lucan squad 4-1. Scoring for Exeter
III were Sivichay Sengkhounmany
with two, Marty DeBruyn and Dan
Martins one each. This set the stage
for an all Exeter final.
Exeter III took charge right from
the start and defeated the Exeter I
team by a 4-1 score to take the A
championship. Scoring for Exeter I
was Derek Beckett and scoring for
Exeter III were Marty DeBruyn with
:two, Dan Martins, and Sivichay
Sengkhounmany one each. Con-
gratulations to the team and coaches
Marie DeBruyn and Ray Lewis for an
excellent season. Also congratula-
tions to Exeter I and coaches Bill Din-
ney and Tony Martins.
In the pee wee playoffs Exeter I
was in the B group and in their first
game could put up a tremendous fight
against Lucan. The game could have
gone either way but it was Lucan that,
came away with a win, 2 -T -over Ex-
eter I. Scoring for Exeter I was Chad
Miller.
In their second game of the round
robin tournament, Exeter I totally
dominated play against Grand Bend
and defeated them 5-2. Chris Eccles
and Sisamay Sengkhounmany played
well for Exeter I. Scorers for Exeter
I were Chris Eccles, Tim VanDam
and Jousef Osman. 'Lucan also played
Grand Bend and defeated them to win
the B championship.
In the A championship Exeter II
played their first game against Ilder-
ton. Exeter dominated play in the
first half and scored once and made
it stand up until the final whistle
despite an all out effort by Ilderton to
tie the game.
Scoring for Exeter II was Mark Van
Bruaene. In their second game Ex-
eter II needed a tie to win the cham-
pionship. Exeter took an early lead
when Henri Debruyn floated a 30 yard
shot under the crossbar.
Nairn however took charge and
took advantage of some offensive
lapses by the Exeter defence to score
three goals for a 3-1 lead with about
15 minutes left.
Exeter II came back and showed
that their unbeaten season was no
fluke. Goals by Justin O'Rourke and
Greg Lamport gave Exeter the two
goals they needed for the tie and the
championship and a season of 17
games without a loss. Great season
kids.
Out of the four A championships
Exeter teams won three and lost 1-0
in the other final. A great season for
every one. One more reminder for the
potluck supper and fun afternoon
