cobbled, and lined with Renaissance
houses winding up to the old castle,
which now holds a museum. The town
boasts many craftsmen who still -ply
ancient trades like lace making, pot-
ting and wood carving, but of course,
Gruyeres is most reknowned for its
cheese. We visited the cheese factory,
just outside the village wall where,
with modern, stainless steel equip-
ment, we watched white -clad young
men in the process of turning out
great rounds of cheese, the method
for which has been jealously guard-
ed for years and passed on to many
generations.
Of course, you can't go to
Switzerland and not do at least a lit-
tle mountain climbing. Art and I
managed the Eglee, a very small
mountain with an easy slope, but even
at that, we found were a lot more
adept at coming down than going up!

Kids getting
head check
Huron county school children are
having their heads examined.
Public health nurses from the
Goderich-based health Unit are
visiting area schools and, classroom,
by classroom, carefully going through
children's hair with instruments that
resemble thin chopsticks. In a rever-
sal of a classic old joke, they are look-
ing not for "rice" but for "lice".
Sorry, that was a lousy joke.
A spokesperson at the Health Unit
said the program is carried out at the
beginning of each school year as a
precautionary measure. No out-
breaks of head lice have been
reported in Huron schools.

Switzerland we were either going up
or down hill, and concluded that must
be the reason you hardly ever see an
overweight Swiss, inspite of the
marvellous tortes and extravagant
cream desserts in every shop.
One day, we drove to the base of
Les Deablerets glacier, which we
made to its splendid top, at 10,000 feet,
in three stages ... gondola, and two
cable cars. Although the ride was a bit
scary, the view from its height was
magnificent, and from where we
could see both the French and Italian
Alps.
It was here we ran into a Saudi Ara-
bian family with six young children
who had never seen snow before.
They went wild, filling up their hats,
and packing it into their coats to take
back to their car far down in the
valley. It seems to me if all mid -east
people like snow that much Canada
should be making a fortune shipping
it to them by the ton.
