Switzerland offers scenic variety
Switzerland is such a small country
that it can be crossed, in any direc-
tion, between breakfast and dinner.
Yet, we were amazed, on our recent
trip, at the variety of scenery ... from
and very elite, but what we enjoyed
• most, during our short stay, was a
walking tour through the old part of
the city with its fascinating narrow,
up-and-down streets, its ancient chur-

rocky spurs and frozen spires, with
huge glaciers, crevises and crags, to
the gentle valleys where soft green
meadows carpet the slopes, and win-
ding streams sparkle between flower -
strewn banks. Then, there are the
sub -tropical towns, growing among
vineyards, aloiig Lac Leman that re-
mind you very much bf the
Mediterranean.
And all this is contained in an area
not much larger than south-western
Ontario. The Swiss we spoke to were
incredulous that we live in a country
so large that we must pass through
four time zones to cover its breadth.
Our first stop was Zurich and, of
course, since we now live in the
Zurich, Ontario area, we were anx-
ious to see its namesake. It's
Switzerland's largest city and finan-
cial centre, and much of it is modern

ches and other buildings, some of
them with bright, medieval pictures
painted on their fronts. Many of them
date back hundreds of years, making
me realize that, in comparison,
anything we have in Canada is not old
at all.
Eating in Switzerland was always
a wonderful experience, and that
night we enjoyed delicious Swiss veal
in mushroom sauce and noodles, a
deep blackberry torte and strong,
black coffee served on a tiny
restaurant balcony, bedecked with
red geraniums, overlooking a narrow,
cobbled street. Then, it was off to our
beds at the Helmhaus for our much
needed and first sleep in Switzerland.
Next day, we headed south-west in
our. rented car, stopping briefly at
Lucerne and Thun. Although it was
raining when we reached Interlaken,

we found a nice heated veranda to en-
joy a tasty bite. Interlaken looked
lovely, but just a bit too 'touristy' for
my taste.
Starting out again, we were soon
driving through the gorgeous valley
that was leading us to Sanaan. It look-
ed exactly how we thought
Switzerland should, with soft green
slopes dotted with gabled chalets, and
mountains rising up in the
background (all of which I described
in last week's column).
One of the intriguing places we
visited while staying at Sanaan was
the enchanting, walled, medieval
village of Gruyeres, which dates its on which no cars are allowed. is

Education Is
Every Child's Right!
1985 is a landmark year for special education in
Ontario. As of September 1, all students with
special needs have the right to an education
program appropriate to their individual needs and
abilities — a big step forward for our children, for our
school boards, for our teachers, and for all those
who believe in equality of educational opportunity.
During the last five years, Ontario school boards,
teacher education institutions, teachers, and
administrators have worked together to make this
goal a reality.
Contact your local school board to find out about
special education programs and services available
in your area.
Education is every child's right,
and everyone's responsibility.
