This column is being written on a be -flowered balcony in a village in southern Switzerland. The sun is hot and bright; haze shrouds the not -so - distant peaks, turning them into hovering, giant, friendly ghosts. That's the difference I find in the Swiss Alps and our own Canadian Rockies. For sheer, rugged, wilderness beauty, our western mountains cannot be surpassed, but their awesome grandiosity can sometimes be over -powering. By comparison the Alps, though grand, seem more benign, more placid and friendly. Their peaks, whether bath- ed in sunshine or glowing pink in the setting sun, or awash in white moonlight, emote peace and content- ment. Probably that's because many of the peaks are not as high as the Rockies, but mostly, I think, its because of the many pastoral valleys that flow through the ranges. Never have I seen so much greenness, so many picturesque buildings, such an array of brilliant flowers, hanging from every chalet and growing in every garden; in short, never have I seen such an incredible mixture of natural and man-made beauty. There are no huge cities in but it'sa good one Switzerland such as we have in North America, and most of the population (j..st over 6 million) lives in country villages that dot the valleys everywhere, strung together like Farmers still drive their cattle to the high summer pastures amid a sym- phony of tinkling bells, while they harvest the lower pastures for winter fodder, and craftsmen still ply their 4 It Seems to me... bright beads on narrow strings of tangled roads that loop and weave along the hillsides. Our village is Sanaan (about the size of Hensall), where our daughter JoAnne has been working for over two months, and it was her being here that prompted this visit. We stroll through the small, twisting streets, overshadowed by ancient buildings with their carved balconies and im- mense, overhanging flower boxes, and feel little has changed here in the last two or three hundred years. by Gwyn Whilsmith crafts in small shops. Old world prin- ting, on some of the houses, tell the original owners' names with a prayer for God's blessing on future genera- tions. The house next to us is dated 1776, while one up the street goes back to 1695. The square stucco church, with its sturdy steeple, was built in 1606, and the original, faded fresco paintings are still visible on the walls. It's still the focal point of the village with its bells chiming out the hours to keep the villagers on time. Most stores open early in the morning, although a few doors do not open until ten, but all close sharply at 12 noon for an hour and a half. The village shuts down tightly in the early evening, except for the pub, which also, closes not a se- cond later than 11 p.m. It's the ideal place for a quiet, restful holiday. Sanaan is a German speaking village, but one just a little way up the mountain is French. Of course, most Swiss are fluent in both languages and some are flawless in English, as well. Practically everyone admits to speak- ing English "a little bit." There are few tourists in this small place, and for the most part, they are either endured or ignored by the natives. However, such is not the case in Gstaad, a bustling town three kilometers away. Tourists flock to Gstaad and are catered to with every kind of service and shopping. Because this is such a particularly beautiful valley, it attracts many of the rich and famous, such as Julie An- drews, David Bowie and Elizabeth Taylor who own chalets. Others, like President Carter, rent suites at the Palace Hotel (which looks more like a 'cas, jle Cyan a palace and whose Please turn to page 7 TO MARRY - Mrs. Ethel Mac- Donald of Crediton is pleased to announce the forthcoming mar- riage of her daughter Donna May to Dennis Anthony, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elzer Masse of Zurich.
