We are talking about the bid by Pete Rose in getting 4,192 base hits which will be one more than the old mark set by Ty Cobb. At the time of writing Rose needed ouly 12 more hits to turn the trick and it should happen soon. An excellent "article on Pete Rose written by Detroit Tigers manager Sparky Anderson appeared in Friday's Detroit News. Anderson says, "When Rose breaks Cobb's record it will be the greatest individual thing that ever happened in sports. When he sets the record it will never be broken. Nobody making the amount of money the players do today will stay in the game long enough or have the intensity to go after it". Anderson says Rose is one of a kind. Ile comes out to play for the people. He believes players have an obligation to them. He's the only one I have ever seen who feels that way. Sparky continued, "Everything he does out there is business from the moment the game starts. In 32 years, I've never been around anyone like him. I don't think we will ever see anybody with that kind of intensity. Like Pete says, he doesn't think it is too much to ask of somebody for two or three hours a day." Anderson concluded, "He loves the game and that is what it is all about. There will never be another. Oh, he's not the best athlete. In fact he would be so far down the line you couldn't find him. But he is the best all round player. He's a grinder. He's what the game of baseball is built on. You teach kids these things. Don't quit, don't back away from anything. Most athletes can't do that. You get, them down and most quit. Pete just comes back madder and meaner." Sports Spotlight by Ross Haugh !rrrrr.rrr,.:....-..:fir............................................... Hockey players busy Earlier this year, players from the National Hockey League participated in the fifth annual Molson's slopitch tournament in the Niagara Falls area. The Los Angeles Kings triumphed in the tournament, winning six straight games while the defending -champion Toronto Maple Leafs lost in the semi-finals. In two days of competition, 19 NHL teams, a collection of old- timers, plus a squad each of linesmen and referees competed for the tournament championship before large crowds in St. Catharines, Welland and Niagara Falls. The Kings' Marcel Dionne, who played his junior hockey in St. Catharines was named the tournament's most valuable player and took home the, Minolta Tower Trophy for his efforts. Bill Derlago of the Toronto Maple Leafs was runner-up in MVP voting. Jimmy Fox, another King, was the tournament's batting cham- poin - with an average of .917 in six games - but still felt that the team's defensive skills captured the series. Bernie Nicholls won the Panasonic Play of" the Game Award for his game -winning, two -run homer, which pushed Team USA to an 8-6 win over Team Canada in the all-star game. Another dethroning occurred when Brad Selwood, a member of the oldtimers squad, won the Pony/Micron Power Hitting Trophy, forcing the abdictation of Chicago Black Hawks' rookie Ed Olczyk. Olczyk was considered the man to beat in this competition, but Selwood (who plays both slo-pitch and fastball in Toronto) prevailed. Selwood's background on the diamond is indeed im- pressive - he once had an opportunity to try out for the Detroit Tigers. wumummmnmlmnmmnmi m miniu nunnommnim iniunmmummmlmuum a mmmmmu mmmummumummummumumumm manunmenmmunmlmlmtmmNmiumimlmummlmmuiummnomnm miimmmmunlm immimnunntmmmi mmumummmummmmlim milim numnnuunuulmmminanmmrr In OBA tourney this weekend Express game up inGreat Lakes final on a single run in the bottom of the • In the Exeter second, Doug Hoff - 10th inning.
