Old dolls could finance trip
A week or so ago, 1 attended the
Doll Show at St. Marys which was an
eye-opener for someone who thought
dolls were just toys for little girls ( or
boys) to play with. Not any more; and
from the size of the crowd and the
than one lady groaning with dismay,
remembering how she'd carelessly
tossed out her old dolls. At today's
prices they'd finance a trip around the
world. ( The moral of the story is don't
throw out your children's dolls! )
It Seems to me...
by Gwyn Whilsmith
number who were buying, I gather I own an old doll, myself ... at least,
it's almost as old as I am, so I suppose
that consitutes an antique. She's
small and slim, about 10 inches high,
with a china head, long braided hair
and bright, glassy blue eyes. She sits
in splendour on my what -not, but,
strangely enough, I don't think she
ever had a name. I've always just
called her "Grandma's doll."
She came to me in the early days
of the Great Depression when we liv-
ed in drought -ridden Saskatchewan,
and my grandparents resided in
British Columbia. Christmas was
coming, and because there was so lit-
tle money for gifts, my grandmother
sent my mother this small doll to be
given to me from Santa Claus. To
keep the secret, Mother carefully hid
it in the far recesses of a high shelf
in the pantry.
One day, while she was baking, I
became bored and, as any small,
curious child might, began to rum-
mage in all the cupboards, looking for
something with which to amuse.
myself. By standing tippy -toe on the
counter of the cupboard, I found I
could reach into the deepest corner of
the top shelf. Since this shelf held on-
ly items that were never used, im-
agine how 1 gasped with delight and
amazement as I pulled out this dark-
haired beauty in a red silk dress,
trimmed with dainty white lace. I was
convinced, she had been put there,
years before, and, somehow, been
forgotten. Thinking I had found a
most wonderful treasure, 1 scurried
down from the cupboard and ran to
tell my mother.
Expecting her to be as overjoyed as
I was I was confounded when she
that doll collecting has become a pret-
ty serious business.
Never had I seen so many dolls,
some over a hundred years old, right
up to the present day Cabbage Patch
Kids. The ones I loved, however, were
the modern, porcelain -headed dolls
with their extravagant hair -dos and
exquisite, old-fashioned clothes. They
were gorgeous, but not cheap. In fact,
there weren't many bargains at the
show. Those hundred year old dolls,
even with their leather bodies hang-
ing in shreds and their hair reduced
to a few pitiful whiffs, cost a mint.
I was staggered by the price of a
soft -bodied, china -headed baby doll
like I used to play with, which was
just under $500. And, if you happen to
be lucky enough to still have your old
Eaton Beauty with its original
clothes, you're looking at something
worth nearly $1,000. I overheard more

snatched the doll from me and scold-
ed me for being a naughty, snoopy
girl. Broken hearted, I ran crying to
my room, and it was years later
before 1 understood her deep disap-
pointment at me finding my doll
which she dearly wanted to surprise
me with that lean Christmas and why
she had been so upset.
Well, the doll was in my stocking on
Christmas morning, not as a present
from Santa Claus, but from my
grandmother. The thrill of receiving
her, however, had fled. Perhaps
that's the reason 1 never played with
her, or perhaps it was because my
grandmother died shortly after and 1
put the doll away in the big, pine
chest.
In any event, I guess that's the
reason 1 still have her today. I don't
know what she's worth by present col-
lectors' standards but it seems to me.
there's really not enough money to
buy her, anyway.
