Special events planned for
20th Annual Bean Festival
Some unusual and exciting events
have been planned to mark the 20th
annual Zurich Bean Festival this
Saturday. The highlight will be a Bat-
tle of the Beans, when a panel of
judges will have to decide on the
relative merits of the famous Boston
baked beans, prepared by the chef of
the Turgin Park Restaurant, Sancull
Hall, Boston, and its less well known
competitor, the Zurich baked bean,
prepared in the Bean Festival kitchen
by volunteer cooking crew.
The taste test will begin on the out-
door stage at 4:00 p.m., and the event
will be filmed by CTV's Live It Up for
broadcast later.
Lee Paul, Kirkton, will be back by
popular demand to MC the other
entertainment scheduled for the day,
running from 11:00 a.m. until 7:00
p.m. The variety of acts will provide
something for all tastes. Included is
the crowd -pleasing, lederhosen-clad
German band that was such a hit last
year with its extensive repertoire
ranging from pop tunes to
oompahpah.
The Exeter Jug Band, always well
received, will prove once again that
there are many talented musicians
right here at home.
Ron Fleming, a farm management
specialist with the Clinton OMAF of-
fice, will bring his guitar and lead a
family -type sing -a -long.
Steve Webb, a magician from On-
tario Place, will give two
performances.
The Aces High, a trick -riding BMX
team of young cyclists from London,
will demonstrate their awesome skills
on two wheels.
The traditional frog -jumping con-
test, organized and sponsored by Dr.
Charles Wallace, will take off,in mid-
afternoon.
All ladies who were winners of the
Queen contest in the last 19 years
have been invited back, and will be in-
troduced on the stage.
The Canadian Horeshoe Champion-
ship will be held on the arena grounds.
Registration will be open from 12 noon
to 1:00 p.m.
Other entertainment will be the
midway, bean demonstrations, and
clowns mingling with Festival
patrons.
Menu change
The menu has been changed for the
20th Annual Bean Festival. Instead of
slices of cold ham, diners this year
will receive a juicy nine -ounce
barbecued pork chop to complement
their plates of beans arid cole slaw.
