should receive in an afternoon dress,
that her rooms should be attractive
with flowers and pictures, and that on
no account should she be found slav-
ing over Ler desk amid bills and
receipts. Rather, she must strike a
pose of "being busy with some elegant
trifle of lace or touching up a sketch,"
all of which could be leisurely laid
aside as her guests arrived. It was
also not proper for her to serve
refreshments, but the book does sug-
gest she spark up the afternoon by
having "a pretty young lady at her
side."
A gentleman .of that long -ago eta
never shook hands with a woman not
related to him, and it was considered
brazen for unmarried ladies "to give
their hands in salute to any but
gentleman relations." If the occasion
arose, it was considered proper for a
married lady to offer her hand to a
gentleman who would "respectfully
press it but without shaking it." And
never, never never did a young lady
ask a gentleman to call. for jt was on-
ly considered proper for him to ask
that favour of her.
These summer days. we often call
up friends to come over for supper
and usually wind up on the back porch
munching hamburgers and hot dogs.
,with everyone casually arriving in
sun clothes and sandals. In grand-
ma's day, the telephone had not yet
been invented so she painstakingly

wrote out all her invitations on
"sheets of mill -finished paper," or
had them properly engraved for a for-
mal dinner. And I'm sure she would
have been shocked to death had her
guests arrived in anything else but
long frocks and black suits.
Apparently pretty young girls were
to be valued, for the old tome also in-
structs the hostess if she wants the
before -dinner conversation not to be
"dull and stupid" she should have
some novelty at hand, "either in the
shape of a personage whom
everybody wants to meet, or a new
picture, a grotesque group, a rare
plant, the latest piece of news to tell,
or a pretty girl to bring forward. "
Each lady was escorted to the din-
ing table by a gentleman who took the
"tips of her fingers and handed her to
her seat. relinquishing his touch with
a slight bow or glance of
acknowledgement." The chapter goes
on to direct the hostess on the setting
of her (able which was to include
"seven -eights of a yard damask
napkins. folded with a thick piece of
bread on each, and the number of wax
lights (candles) to equal that of the
guests." There is also greatdetail on
how to eat certain foods such as
"cheese is crumbled with the fork and
eaten with it, never touched by the
fingers," and "oranges are held on a
fork while peeled."
Well, things have changed a bit
since grandma's day. We certainly
are a lot Tess formal. and women are
no longer bound to their houses as
they used to be. No doubt women lib-
bers would be aghast at the idea of
having a pretty young woman on
hand just to enhance the event.
Nevertheless, a pretty girl still adds
zest to a party, and it seems to me,
good manners and scintillating con-
versation go a long way, too, to make
any modern social event worthwhile.
just as they did in grandma's day.
