Sailing through Iife with feet firmly planted on terra firma
'l nere's.nothing so pretty as an ar-
mada of sailboats slipping down the
lake, sails billowing on a bright sum-
mer's morning. Not being nautically
minded, however, I'm content just to
watch them, with my feet planted
firmly on terra 17rnha.
Nevertheless, while visiting friends
up the lake who are avid sailing en-
thusiasts. 1 was, somehow, tempted
into accepting an invitation to try this
new experience. After being zipped
into a life jacket and having my
glasses tie(I 00 securely "In case the
boom should hit you on the head" )
started to question the wisdom of my
hasty decision, but, my enthusiastic
sailor host assured me there was not
a danger in the world and that l would
thoroughly enjoy the .adventure.
And he was right! It was magnifi-
cent. How exhilarating it is to feel the
fresh wind running over your face and
hair while the waves spank the boat
as you skim downwind on water that
dances and shines all around you.
It had always puzzled me how
sailboats make their way back
against the wind, and it was at this
point that I got my first real lesson in
the art of sailing. To sail against the
wind one must tack or zigzag at a 45
degree angle to the wind. This is done
by steering with the rudder and ad-
justing the sails, which I think is call-
ed trimming. After a few demonstra-

host called, which meant 1 had tempt at sailing was quite successful,
and now when 1 see those graceful lit-
tle boats skiffing along out there on
the horizon. I have some idea, at
least, of what's going on on board.
We often speak of people who "sail
through life" suggesting they do it
with very little effort. Not necessari-
ly so. Usually, a person who sails
through life has, like the skipper of a
sailboat, learned the basic rules, and
practices them. He/she may enjoy'oc-
casions of sailing before the wind
when things go smoothly, but is also
aware there will come a time when
the wind will reverse and he will be
forced to sail into it. He knows when
to change his direction, and with pa-
tience and endurance work his way
against the winds that prevail upon
him. If there is danger of the boat of
life capsizing, he does not panic, but
keeps his cool, shifts his weight and
balance his craft again.
He, too, may get "cat►ght in irons",
but does not give up and let his life
drift aimlessly. Rather he perseveres
until he can work his way out of that
situation. -
Sailing on Lake Huron is an in-
vigorating experience, but it seems to
me, sailing through life can be ex-
citing, too. and fairly smooth, if we
will byt learn to follow the basic
maneuvers and use the common
sense with which the good Lord en-
dowed us.
