Express hit WOAA finals The Exeter Express have reached the Western Ontario Athletic Associa- tion finals by defeating Kincardine in a best -of -three series: They now -go to meet Thorndale in the first round of OBA playoffs. After losing the first game of the series in Kincardine 5-3. the Express rallied in a homedoubleheader Sun- day winning by scores of 13-4 and 13-12 to advance to the next round. The final game went 10 innings. In the first game. Kincardine scored four times in the fourth inning and were never headed. The gxpress hit the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning with two runs as Dave Bogart was safe on an error and scored on a double from the bat of Dave Shaw. The latter even- tually crossed the plate ona Perry Stover sacrifice fly. Paul Gilmour's single in the fifth sent Brian Horner home with tie third and final Exeter score. Jeff Fuller went the distance on the mound for the Express. Ile allowed a dozen hits while striking out five. In Sunday's first game, Perry Stover while allowing 11 hits held the visitors to only four runs. He record- ed three strikeouts. The Express bats were hot with at least one run in each of the six innings they were at the plate with a 14 hit on attack Walt parkin -Soil -singled -1h the first_ frame and came home ahead of Dave Shaw on a home run blast. In the se- cond, Brian Mercer and Dave Bogart counted on a double by parkinson. In the Exeter third, Perry Stover walked and scored as Dave Atthill and Brian Ilorner delivered hits. Parkinson walked in the fourth and hit home plate on hits by Shaw and Stover. Hits by Walt Parkinson, Doug Hoff- man, Paul Gilmour and Brian Mercer chased three runs home in the fifth and hits by Kevin Hern, Gilmour and Jeff Fuller produced the final four runs for the winners. A single by Dave Bogart sent paul Gilmour home with the winning run for the Express in the bottom of the 10th for the 13-12 win. In the Exeter first, Dave Bogart tripled .and scored on a groundout. Dave Hunt's single sent Brian Horner home with another run in the second .and Walt parkinson walked and scored on a Perry Stover hit in the third. Royals win at Ripley Exeter Royals travelled to Ripley on the weekend and with a solid team effort won five consecutive games to go undefeated in the 16 team double knockout event. They opened up with a 4-1 win over Chepstow Friday night. John Kernick led the way with three hits while ' Barry Baynham scored twice. Dan Heywood pitched a strong game to pickup the win striking out 11 batters while giving up two hits. The second game against Tiverton who had beat them in Tara saw lots of scoring. Barry Baynham. Dan Heywood, Randy Kraut. Dave trout, Mike Desjardine and Jeff Lindenfield all reached base twice in the game which ended 10-5 for the Royals. Brian Hodgins got the win with strong relief help from Dan Heywood who shut them out the last three innings. Game three saw the Royals meet Bluewater Intermediates. After spot- ting them a 4-0 lead in the first two in- nings the Royals stormed hack to score eight consecutive runs. John Kernick's three run triple was a big lift for the Royals. The top of the third inning they added three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth. Pete Tuckey, Dan Heywood and Barry Baynham each scored twice. Dave Prout went four innings to pick up the win. After a shaky start he settled down and handcuffed them. Brian Ilodgins came on in relief to pick up the save._ Game four saw the only undefeated teams meet. The surprising Bluevale midget team gave the Royals a lough game but they emerged with a 3-1 win. Barry Baynham, Randy Kraul and Pete Tuckey scored runs. Dan Heywood.limited them to three hits while striking out 12 batters. Jim Allison was taken to hospital in this game'as he crashed into the fence try- ing to make a catch. Jeff Linderlfield replaced him and made an outstan- ding shoestring catch to save a run. Three Express runs crossed the plate in the fourth. The big blow was a Dave Hunt home run. Gilmour and Horner were. the others to hit safely. —_In ire sixth. three runs were produc- ed on hit�s'by BogarT-; "Da%?e Shaw, - Doug Hoffman and Brian Ilorner. Single runs came in the seventh and eighth innings with Bogart,.Shaw and Hoffman delivering the hits. The tat- ter's was a triple. Dave Bogart singled home Dave At- thitt in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra innings. Sharing pilching.duties for the Ex- press were Brian Iforner. Dave Itunt. Dave Shaw and Steve Pearce. The final saw Goderich who had battled back from the losers round emerge against the Royals. Veteran pitcher Simon Langois and Royals righthander Brian Hodgins locked up in a pitchers duel. Goderich opened the scoring in the top of the fifth as Arnie Parker, top batter in the touney tripled to right centre. He scored oh a double down the left field line by Len Kalkman. The Royals came back in the bot- tom of the fifth as batterymates Brian Hodgins and Barry Baynham led the way. Hodgins led off with a triple down the left field line. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Lindenfield. Dave Pront who had reached on a walk and went to second on Lindenfields fly ball then came in to score as Baynham slashed a single to left field. Brian Hodgins picked up the win allowing three hits while striking out seven batters. Strong defensive plays by Mike Desjardine and John Kernick aided the victory. Dan Heywood won a Labatts bag for top pitcher in the tourney. The Royals won $400 in prize money and individual awards. The touney also featured the base running of coach Fred Cook. Members who travelled to Ripley' were Barry Baynham, Dan Heywood. John Kernick, Randy Kraut. Mike Desjardine, Brian Hodgins, Dave Prout, Jeff Ltndenfield, Pete Tuckey. Jim Allison, and Gary Skinner. In league play Poplar Hill edged the Royals 2-1 Thursday night. The Royals had seven hits and left 11 run- ners on base as they failed to capitalize on their chances. Brian Hodgins took the Toss allow- ing five hits while striking out 9 bat- ters. Jim Daniels got the win allow- ing seven hits with 10 strikeouts. . The Royals played fast night in Lieury while Thursday the Lucan White Sox are in town. Friday the Royals annual tourney gets underway. Tykes rally to draw even The Exeter Tykes, sponsored by Don Cowan Fuels Ltd., scored a thrill- ing come -from -behind tie Tuesday. They scored seven runs in the fianl in- ning, three of them with two out to tie Clinton 13-13. They sent 12 batters to the plate and had runners on second and third before the final out was recorded. The game featured five triples, four by Exeter. Fred Steciuk led the team while making his pitching debut. He went two for four, both hits being triples, with three RBI's. Jason Heywood also added three RBI's and Ryan Stuart was two for three with two RBI's. Steve Farquhar had one of the triples, which drove in Ryan Linden - field in the first inning. Steve Silcock also drove in a run with a triple in the last inning with one out which kept Exeter's seven run rally alive. • Foursome of Ironwood dub The Ironwood Golf Course was the site of another exciting two -ball four- some Friday. The event was played, for one of the few times, in beautiful weather much to the delight of the 16 participants. The twosome of Kim Pinder and Jeff Fuller combined to shoot a score of 44 which edged Linda Steele and Randy Gilfillan by one stroke to take first place honors. Helen Webber and John Gray also combined for a "commendable" score and were recorded justly for their efforts. The next two -ball foursome will be held Friday, August 9 with tee -off bet- ween .5 and 5:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun now as the golfing season advances. Country club - girls entertain Members of the Exeter golf and country club ladies division entertain- ed 40 members from Ironwood and Seaforth Clubs Tuesday evening. Low scorer was Jean Dow of Seaforth with Helen Burton and Dorothy Marks of Exeter tying second. Hidden holes were won by Hazel Beaver, . Eileen Rannie, Dorothy Kipfer and Betty Smith. Jean Dow had the longest drive on number nine and Helen Wasnidge of the Exeter Club on number three. Tied for the Least number of putts were Marion McClure, Rita Care and Dorothy Marks. - The. most -honest golfer was Bev Armstrong, Seaforth. After golfing- the olfingthe ladies had a pot luck dinner and prizes were awarded and a number of door prizes were drawn.
