wrapping paper, magazines or old
greeting cards. You can also recycle
plastic cherry tomato or strawberry
baskets. Simply line with coloured
tissue paper or decorate by threading
lace, ribbon or rickrack through the
sides. Rolls or bars can be wrapped
in plastic and the ends tied with gold
or coloured cord. Or wrap cookies in-
dividually in squares of plastic or
cellophane and pack in another
container.
Virtually any package can be given
a finishing touch with a label ( use ad-
dress labels, pictures cut from the
front of suitable greeting cards or
self-adhesive party badges). And
since everyone wants to know how to
make the item, include a copy of the
recipe on an attractive recipe card.
Other items, which are usually found
around the homes that can find new
life on gifts include dried flowers,
bells, mini -corsages, baubles, rib-
bons, bows and holiday sprigs.

When it comes to gift giving, often
the gifts which are most appreciated
are those which come from the kit-
chen. But no matter how delicious
they are, the impression homemade
delicacies create will be much
greater if they are presented
attractively.
Fortunately, says Mary Lye, Con-
sumer Services Supervisor with
Robin Hood Multifoods, packaging
your homemade gifts so they rival
those found in shops is neither dif-
ficult nor expensive.
Mrs. Lye has a number of sugges-
tions which can be -used for gift giv-
ing or put into practice this summer
and fall at local fairs where Robin
Hood is sponsoring home baking com-
petitions focusing on the creative
packaging of favourite cookie of bar
recipes. The Exeter fair invites you
to participate in these very special
baking contests.
A quick look around the house will
uncover a number of suitable con-
tainers - you can use plastic plates or
trays, patterned paper plates or
wicker plate holders and baskets.
Don't overlook plastic containers, cof-
fee or shortening cans which can be

display at Playhouse
The award winning potter, Addy
McPhee will display a beautiful selec-
tion of stoneware and porcelain at
Huron Country Playhouse from
August 5 to August 10. Addy, who now
operates a Bayfield studio, was born
in Iceland, educated in England and
became involved in pottery as a hob-
by at the Oakville Art Society in 1968.
After moving to Toronto in 1970, she
studied with Robin Hopper at the Cen-
tral Technical School and subsequent-
ly established her own studio in
downtown Toronto.
Addy's pottery had been exhibited
in galleries in such places as
Hamilton, Toronto, Burlington,
Thamesford and Bayfield. Currently,
Addy works in her studio in Bayfield,
creating beautiful and unique
stoneware and porcelain pottery. Her
platters, vases, bowls and goblets
have won awards at the Ontario Craft
Council in Toronto and at the London
Potter's Guild. Her work appeared in
the "Glass and Pottery" show last
May at the London Regional Art
Gallery.
"More and more people are becom-
ing interested in pottery", says Ms.
McPhee. "When I started studying
ceramics, 14 years ago, there were
only a handful of courses available.
Today, the teaching standards for art
courses have improved immensely
and there are more younger potters
coming up through the ranks. I met
other potters and became involved
with the Ontario Potter's Assoccia-
tion." From 1975-83, Ms. McPhee
established and operated Beechwood
Pottery in Seaforth. when Addy mov-

monished her to allow no scent of
decay from vegetables or meat, no
slops anywhere on the premises, no
dead, musty air in any room, and ab-
solutely no mouldering food in closets
or cellar. She was to see that the fires
were started as early in the fall, and
kept as late in the spring as "the
weakest and chilliest of her family
desired, and to look after the clothing
from a hygienic view so that her fami-
ly was warm enough, and cool
enough, to ward off attacks of
cramps, cough and neuralgia. She
was advised to spend an extra shill-
ing on good potatoes and apples
because "they make more muscle
Than poor (»ries, and don't poison
anybody."
In case a member of her family did
take ill there were "Unfailing
Medicinal Receipts and Cures" such
as the one for sore throat: "Simmer
slices of salt pork in hot vinegar and
apply to throat as hot as possible." '1'o
restore from stroke of lightning the
remedy was "Shower with cold water
for two hours; if the patient does not
show signs of life, put salt in the water
and continue to shower an hour
longer."
Which all goes to show that life was
not always easy for the homemaker
of over 100 years ago, but she was en-
couraged in my grandmother's cook
book with the following words: "You
are the engineer to feed the fires, tc,
keep the wheels oiled, with the whole
family system depending on you.
Don't dare call such work low. There
are great deeds to be done in Cana-
dian kitchens".
And it seems to me, even in this
modern age, there still are! In any
event, I was so tired after reading
about Grandma's work day that I
never did get to the food recipes.
Perhaps that will be another story.
