Dashwood Friedsburg Days
Church service well attended
By MRS. IRVIN RADER
The Ecumenical Service Sunday
morning was attended by many peo-
ple. The choir and the Prouty family
from Exeter rendered beautiful
music. Guest speaker Jack
Burghardt, London gave us much to
think about and be thankful for on the
125th anniversary of Dashwood.
The firemen provided a pancake
brunch.

Baynham, Oshawa, spent a few days
last week with Mrs. Elda Koehler and

ed Brewery Creek.
According to our bus driver this
is where illicit stills brewed a
whisky called Hokenui. It was
brewed in nearby limestone
scarps and the recipe needed
pure mountain rainwater. The
locals say it was great stuff, but,
outsiders claimed you could go
bald overnight on one thimbleful.
We crossed the South Otago
rich farming potential are to
Dunedin with a population of
114,300. It is considered the most
Scottish city outside of Scotland.
Some of the fourth generation
locals there still roll their rrrr's.
We would guess especially after
sampling some liokonui.
Dunedin was once the cultural,
spiritual and educational centre
for all of New Zealand. But, now
the swing has gradually gone to
the North Island. Firstly to Well-
ington and now Auckland is Head
Officeville.
At Dunedin we toured
Olveston. This is a stately home
which has been taken over by the
city from the Theomin family.
Included in the furnishings and
contents are a treasure house of
antique furniture, paintings,
priceless silverware, rare
porcelain and ornaments col-
lected worldwide.
On the way back from Dunedin
to Christchurch we travelled the
northern highway taking us past
Oamaru. This city is called White
Stone. A look at chimneys and
most buildings tell you why.
Most were built of local
limestone that was cut and
shaped with an ordinary wood -
saw, but dried out as hard as
granite.
We then headed across the
Waitaki river to Timaru, the city
of champions. It was here that
pioneer aviator R.W. Pearce had
an airplane in the skies three
months after the Wright
Brothers.
Many crack athletes came
from here including 1936 Olympic
gold medalist Jack Lovelock.
1974 Commonwealth games
10,000 metre winner Dick Taylor,
world billards champ Clark
McConachy and boxer Ruby Bob
Fitzimmens.
and Mrs. Paul Rader, Ben and Robin,
London.
The Slo-pitch men's and ladies'
teams report eight to 10 bats and a
dozen balls in a canvas bag were
taken from the club house at the ball
diamond in a break-in.
Friedsburg Days
Friedsburg is over for another year

beautiful weather and a bigger and
better parade. The balloon lift-off and
birthday cake was great for the young
and old. Winners at the euchre were
Martha Weigand, Mrs. L. Tice of Lon-
don, Mary Rader, Gloria Beierling
and Donna Lesperance.
In the Seniors draw first prize,
quilt, Mrs. Grace Morlock; second,

cushion, Mrs. Ken Preszcator,
Seaforth.
